Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

2 miscarriages...now what??

I just (today) had my second miscarriage in 4 months and I'm not sure what to expect next. I keep hearing that "most miscarriage causes are unknown" and "there's nothing you can do to prevent" but I NEED to know what's going on with my body or I'm going to go crazy (if that's possible after this sh*tty year so far). Are there tests anyone has heard of to help figure out multiple losses? Or do you just keep trying until one sticks? I really don't know if I can go through this a third time but we don't have any children- and I'm not ready to give up yet. This. Is. Terrible.

Have you had your progesterone tested while pregnant? It could be low, which is causing you to miscarry.
I think after 3 miscarriages, you are referred to a specialist?

I'm sorry for your losses. Good luck.

  • So sorry you are going through this. My ob told me I could bring in the sac to have tested to see if something went wrong with chrosomes so we would have closure with why we miscarried.

  • I'm so sorry for your losses. My OB told me that they don't get concerned until you have 3 consecutive mc....I think that's just incomprehensible. I just had my first apt with an RE and he says there is a test for certain cervical cultures that MAY indicate you are prone to miscarry. And it is treatable. I did get the cultures done, still waiting results. Just something to ask your Dr about.
  • I'm so sorry for your losses. I'm in the same boat and have lost two babies 4 months...one in November and one in February. I brought our baby into the ER and they did fetal testing, which all came back normal. I requested to see my OB to develop a plan, and she said that often other practices will meet with you to discuss recurrent loss after 3 losses, but she didn't believe in that. She ran tests to look for auto-immune disorders, thrombophilia, is doing a chromosomal analysis between my husband and I and is also doing a Sonohysterography to look for abnormalities in my uterus (fibroids, polyps, etc). I completely understand how you feel about not being able to move forward without looking for answers and I hope you can talk with your OB to do that for you. T&Ps your way!

Thanks ladies! I love my doc and feel very comfortable with her so I may push to have these tests done at loss number two. @Embuzz247 I agree that having to wait for the third is crazy!!

  • I'm in a similar situation. First miscarriage last March at 7 weeks. Got pregnant again after waiting one cycle and found out at the 12 week ultrasound that the baby's heart stopped beating around 8 weeks. Had to have a D&C after that. My periods were really irregular after that (had to get progesterone to start them when I was 12 weeks post D&C and still no period, and then I would only bleed for a day, two tops). My husband and I were worried that the D&C had caused some scarring, so following that I had a TON of bloodwork, two ultrasounds, a uterine biopsy, and an HSG. All came back fine, so I am guessing we were just unlucky. My doctor wouldn't do any genetic testing and won't until after 3 miscarriages, which I think is cruel. I am lucky they agreed to do what they did just to try and figure out what was screwing up my cycles. My husband isn't sure he wants to go the testing route if we have a third miscarriage and wants to consider saving our money for adoption instead if we have another loss. I can't handle the thought of another loss but I don't want to give up on having a baby either! And I know many women out there go through more than three, I am just not sure we are strong enough to. We decided to wait a while and de-stress following those two losses, but as it gets closer to the time to TTC again I am just getting more and more anxious.

Thanks for letting me vent. I am new here and trying this out. Its incredibly stressful keeping it all in, but no one ever wants to talk about these things.
  • I'm so sorry for your losses. I understand the frustration and heartache of recurrent miscarriage. I just recently had my 3rd in a row 3 weeks ago. The last two were within 4mo of one another.
Today was my followup appt. and I got the go ahead to TTC. I had some blood work done to check my thyroid and a genetic panel that my SO is going to have his done next week.
I'm 37 so my Dr. seems to think that this could be about egg quality. Honestly, I just don't know if I'll ever know why this keeps happening.
I hope you get some answers.

  • @thistle8677 I'm so glad you finally got the thyroid test done. Keep us posted on the results.

  • @thistle8677, I wondered if mine was egg quality, too. I'll be 37 next month. I'm sure I've still got some good ones in there, though. Fingers crossed that the next one is.

  • @carrieandroy it is possible, but it is also entirely possible that just like any pregnancy at any age, there will be a chance of mc.  It sucks not knowing and at the same time, it's comforting to know that it is not uncommon.  Sad at that is...:(

  • @thistle8677, yeah, that's exactly what my doctor said. He said my age really only increases my chance of mc by 5%. (It increases more in the 40's.) It was probably just a chance occurrence.
