3rd Trimester

Failed 1 hr glucose test

Hey ladies. I recently failed my 1 hr glucose test and so now I have to take the 3 hr glucose test. I know that many woman fail the 1 hr and still pass the 3 hr, but I have to wait until next Wednesday to take the 3 hr and I'll admit I'm stressing out about it. This is my 2nd child and I passed the first 1 hr test no problem. I never expected the possibility of GD with this one. I'm terrified of the possibility for complications and of having a large baby. I've read that GD basically has no symptoms for most women. I've only gained 13 lbs and I'm 27 weeks 2 days. I thought I was doing so good. I'm just bummed and worried and looking for any positive feedback that might help me get through this week of waiting.
Baby Girl, Teagan Rae, due June 2nd!

Re: Failed 1 hr glucose test

  • Thank you!! That is the first I've seen about not having a big baby with a positive GD diagnosis. It's very reassuring. For some reason it just scares me! I am already cutting out sugar and trying to up my protein and do only whole grains. I figure it's healthy and regardless of the result of the test it's good for me and my baby girl.

  • Good luck on your 3 hr test. I failed one hr last pregnancy but next test fine and this pregnancy i passed the hr test (just) you are doing all you can so relax dont stress as it is what it is.
  • I had GD with my first (diabetes runs on both sides of my family). I had some trouble with keeping my blood sugar in check. I also delivered 1 day before my due date and E was only 6lb 13 oz, so not a big baby (I am also very short). The issue we did have was since my blood sugar wasn't maintained well, E's blood sugar dropped about an hour after birth and it took us 24 hours to get him stable, so keep that in mind.

GD isn't fun, but it isn't the worst thing ever. I have my 1 hr next week, so hoping I am in the 40% that doesn't get it with the second baby.

    GL!

  • I think you are getting carried away & freaking out prematurely. I failed the one hour both times & passed the three hour each time. I followed a GD diet anyway because I felt like my numbers were borderline & my midwife was ok with it.

Even if you have GD, it's not a personal failing & it doesn't doom you to have a large baby. It's all luck of the draw & really nothing you do alters how your placenta processes sugars.

    Deep breaths.

  • Don't stress about it. I had GD with my son. I gained over 50lbs and he was born 7lbs 1oz. An average size baby. During this pregnancy I have eaten much better with GD in mind from the start and gained less weight because I'm focused on nutrient-dense foods instead of anything I crave. You will be fine. It can sound much more stressful than it actually is. Also, there are lots of threads where women talk about their GD experiences. I wish I knew that last time. You are already doing yourself a great service by talking to other moms about their experiences. Good luck on your 3hr test, but again, don't stress it.
  • Thank you everyone!! I was just a little worried more than anything and needed to talk to women who understood versus my husband who was like just wait for the test. Easier said then done, at least for me :) The good news is I passed the 3hr test!! I've also been having borderline blood pressure and my appointment immediately following --- my BP was completely normal. Such a relief :)

  • For what it's worth, I failed the 1 hour but the margin was slimmer so my OB didn't order a 3 hour.  That freaked me out so I put myself on a GD diet.  I then started dropping weight from cutting out carbs, etc. and that freaked me out more.  So to put my mind at ease I borrowed a friend's glucometer, tested every AM for several days, and never once had a high reading.  I told my OB and he sort of shook his head like I was nuts for even worrying about my blood sugar, but I was still worried. So as others have said, it's not a guarantee that you have GD.  Hopefully the 3hour will be reassuring for you.
  • HAHAHA I love your post, only because I would totally do the same thing!!! After failing the 1 hr I started the GD diet too... I didn't even want to eat the candy bars for the 3 hr tests.

  • From what I read only 25% of those who fail the 1hr test fail the 3hr test. Even then all you have to do is manage your diet and everything should be fine.
