Help me spell Ellory

We're team green, and I've had a terrible time with a girl's name. I've floated a million ideas, and my husband likes nothing. I was seriously worried that we were headed into Moon Unit territory. Anyways, I suggested Ellory last night, and my husband really likes it, but we're lost on what the best spelling would be. Ellory. Elory. Ellery. Elorie. I could probably come up with a dozen variations. Any thoughts on this?

  • I've never heard of that name but it reminds me of celery.

  • Dont think it can be spelled correctly because i do not know it
  • If you're going to use it, I'd spell it "Ellery."  That's how I've seen it before.  Ellory looks like you missed the mark on Mallory or had a typo with Elroy. It just doesn't look real to me.
  • Ellery is masculine. I'd keep looking.
  • And, it's really not that great of a name anyway. Like a pp said, it's really close to celery, the lamest of vegetables.

    N-O
  • I've seen Eleri

  • That was weird I didn't hit quote or post, at least not intentionally. It's actually true though I haven't heard the name before. Good luck. I have a husband like that. I know what you're going through.
  • The proper spelling is Ellery.

This is a masculine name. I would not use it on a girl. However, Ellery was derived from another masculine name, Hilary, which has a feminine variant spelling of Hillary. This name is less common these days but does have great history and would be a great choice.

  • Thanks ladies. I've it heard occasionally visiting my husband in New Zealand, where he travels for work pretty often, but had no idea how it was spelled. I knew it was masculine, but thought it may work for a girl. It seems like every girl in our yuppie neighborhood has a boy's name anyhow, so this would hardly be ground-breaking.

But why ever would you want to be like everyone else in a yuppie neighborhood?

There are plenty of awesome, traditionally feminine names. No need to be hipster trendy.

Agree. If everyone else in the neighborhood is using masculine names on girls that would be all the more reason to select a lovely, feminine name for your daughter.

  • I fought like you wouldn't believe for Mary. At one point, I almost brokered an agreement on Camille. It's just something you need spousal buy-in for, and so far, Ellery is the only name I've suggested that is getting some traction. Work in progress, I suppose.
