Pale mommas

so with summer coming up, I usually get the tanning package and use the self tanning lotions, at least on my legs, arms, and face to get the spring/summer glow. I asked my OB about using the self tanners and she said "Use at your own risk" anyone else gonna rock the porcelain look this summer?

Re: Pale mommas

  • ME! I live in Florida and spend many days out on our boat, so it's gonna be a rough summer slathered in sunscreen and long sleeves. I'm really really fair skinned and my doctor told me I had to wear long sleeves on the boat to protect myself...it's gonna be a miserable pregnant summer :( I never did self tanners anyway because I'm so fair they just turn me strange unnatural colors, lol.
  • @saraking437, oh wow! Yeah that would be super hard!! I don't think I would be able to basically bundle up in that Florida sunshine! lol my parents live there and I was going to go visit them in June. My OB said I could sit in the sun but had to use sunscreen, which I do anyways but I don't get a tan from the sun, just nasty sun burns!!

  • lol the "porcelain " look ! nice !  I look like a pasty little ghost right now.  :-/ I could def use some sun in my life.  I live in Houston and it's awful humid 100 degree summers. YAY!
  • Yeah, I'm looking forward to the gorgeous weather but not my new attire :( I've had several cases of sun poisoning so I'm sure that's why my doctor is pushing it. I did go and buy some of the lightweight (made for summer) long sleeve button ups made by Columbia, so maybe it won't be too awful...:( my expectations aren't high though! Enjoy your visit with your parents!
  • I love my pale skin, I actually try to avoid getting a tan! Just not a fan of the browned look, it doesnt look natural at all on my body! Just doesnt work for everyone I guess :) So far theres still snow on the ground here though, so dont have to worry about it yet.

  • I don't like to go super dark like most ladies do lol I just like to have a little color, I'm sure I'll survive and if anyone asks then I'll just say I'm rocking what I got!! Haha I'm going to be worried about other things besides being tan this summer like trying to stay cool!! Indiana summers can be HORRIBLE but you never know when to expect it, hopefully it will be like last year and not get stupid hot until August or September :)
  • Yes im alarmingly fair skinned but have learned to own it..especially since moving to south florida. Its funny though because my mom (who still lives in ohio) will get a tan walking to get the mail! :((
  • I'm very fair skinned and I'm white as a ghost most of the time. I don't get into all those self tanners and stuff. Maybe used a few times years ago, but that's it.
Embrace your paleness ladies! I don't feel like pale is ugly. Never have. Do I go to the beach and get some color? Yes! I amazingly don't burn much. Do I NEED to? No.
  • I live in Alaska - land of the pale skin!
  • I live in Texas, and I'm pretty sure I'm the palest person in a 200 mile radius. I work outside a lot, so I buy bulk sunscreen and pretty much bathe in it. I've never been able to tan, I burn, peel, then just go right back to being pale.

  • I live in Houston too! Dreading the summer!!! :( I'm so pasty and the heat is gonna kill me. Not to mention I feel like a cow
  • I read that tanning was safe as long as you don't raise your body temp too much.....

The article you posted gives multiple reasons why tanning is not safe especially for pregnant women.

  • As a religious Sunless tanner user I have always used the St Tropez foam that comes with the application mit ( sephora or ulta carries it). I absolutely plan on using that this summer but want to wait until I am in my second trimester. It says right on the product website it is safe to use when pregnant since it does not penetrate the skin like a lotion would. My next appointment with the doctor I am going to double check. Any other suggestions??! I was thinking of using the jergens natural glow that gradually tans but the st tropez is so easy and quick it gives you color right away!
  • I definitely wouldn't go tanning or spray tan while pregnant but that is just my personal opinion. I'm rocking the paleness and proud haha I found for my skin tone some bronzer adds a sun kiss look. Do whatever works for you! :)
  • @Starrkle all of the warnings listed in that article are things everyone should be careful of, not just pregnant women. Overheating is the main concern for only pregnant women because of dehydration. Everyone should avoid high exposure to UV rays because of melanoma. The only thing it specifically warns of is tanning during the first trimester.

I will be using a tanning bed to avoid being burned very badly this summer. In a tanning bed I can control the time and amount on UV exposure, and I will be closely monitoring the temperature. I don't recommend using them for the first time while pregnant because you have to learn how your body reacts to that type of exposure. I know that when my skin feels a little bit warmer than bath water it's too hot. After that point I will burn.

  • @leabyrd I think I will try that! Is it expensive? I normally use I think Banana boat, works better with my skin. Jergans never worked on me and the smell always gave me headaches :/ when I use BB I use some bath & body works lotion to even it out and to get that vitamin e with it. I'm going to wait until my second trimester for sure and maybe do the long maxi dresses this summer so I don't have to worry about my legs lol my arms are actually darker then my legs naturally I guess because my arms are exposed more on a daily basis. I wouldn't use a tanning bed....our small town has a tanning salon and the girls wouldn't even let me step two feet in the place lol it's ok though, I don't really have the time or energy to get off work, drive home to change, go tan, shower, then start dinner for my husband and I.
  • I've never come across a sunless tanning lotion i couldn't smell from across a room.. so i would never use. As far as tanning goes i can't wait to get outside more & not be pasty but there's no way i'd go in a tanning bed right now..
  • Pale one right here, too! No matter what I do I can't get tan in the first place and I can apply self tan lotion perfectly, but I swear my skin absorbs it the moment it touches my skin and ends up streaky so I just can't even go there. I've learned to embrace the porcelain year round, my big issue is that being pale shows all the circles under the eyes and just how crappy and tired I am. That "pregnancy glow" apparently doesn't work with this girl's skin tone, anyone else experience that?
  • @Moonseeds92, I absolutely agree. It's the much safer route for me because I have to be outside often for work and WILL burn, if im not already tanned. I've been told by my doctor several times, pre-pregnancy, that routine tanning is definitely the safer route than unexpected sporadic burns. That said, my baseline stays around pretty long so I didn't Tan my first trimester.

And as for @karlimeliss, read it again, hun. The risks listed are the risks always associated with tanning and with the Mother's health. I have a little too much Folate and folic acid intake (yes both), according to my doc. But we decided it'd even out to keep my diet and supplement plan the way it isand get the amount of sun I do. So yay! :D
  • I Don't Tan. I Burn. Even With Sunscreen I Turn Beetred And Once It Goes Away I Am Just As White As Before! I understanD Hoping Some Natural Sun Will Work But Hey Im As White As Sour Cream 365
  • I proudly wear my pale skin. I had a huge skin cancer cut from my neck about 4 years ago and have a substantial scar on my neck and my leg.

I am not criticising anyone who tans (far from it), just please take care of yourselves. I was only 23 when it was found and it has changed my entire life - I don't walk outside without smothering myself in sun block etc, I would hate for anyone else to go through what I did.
  • Seattle girl here! Always pasty!
  • @jennifercurry1 it's around $40 and the mit is about $6 but it will last a good while. I had one bottle for About 6 months. The smell isn't bad it's somewhat sweet and is gone by the end of the day!

  • Mr doctor told me not to use the tanning bed no matter what. I go Solar Dimensions, where like you said you can control uv exposure, time and there's fans and mist to keep me cool, but for arguments sake with my doctor I'm avoiding them. It will be interesting to see how I do in a bikini over the summer though lol I'm always outside in the summer but I'll be so far along and in Georgia heat...I may just have to rock the porcelain look this year :)

I'll be sporting the SPF 1,000 this summer. I used to tan in a tanning bed to avoid burning but I can't afford that. Anything with DHA except Mystic Tan turns me bright orange, so I skip it.

Jergens just came out with a new lotion that's supposed to be like a BB cream for your body, so maybe I'll try that because my pale skin plus dark hair combo makes my legs look awful.

I actually don't mind being pale other than my legs, though.

Edited to add: be careful if you're using self-tanner while pregnant. It's usually perfectly safe, but your hormones can cause your skin to react differently, so even avid spray tan/self-tanner users might get off results. I recommend starting with a lighter shade to see how your skin reacts. (Used to work at Palm Beach Tan)

I know. That's exactly why I wouldn't do it. Over exposure to uv rays in dangerous to anyone, but even more so for pregnant women. I do care about my own health and well being. Taking care of myself is even more important now that I am a mother.

  • I just came in to comment that... I thought this title said "POLE mamas!" I had myself a good laugh for a second about some big bellies sliding down the pole. lol carry on!

  • I live in Costa Rica, my skin is naturally very pale, but I have "collected" a tan over time ;) Anyway, during this pregnancy, the sun is affecting me a lot, I get dizzy and get heat rashes all the time :( I'm used to this 70-80 degree weather, yet every day for some reason it becomes more unbearable, babymooning next week to the cold mountains ;) yay
