Elective U/S

Hi ladies! We had an early u/s for an unrelated matter and they told us it looked like a boy. At my 21 week appt this morning the tech couldn't get a look at anything as baby was being modest! She said she didn't feel comfortable telling me either way so we decided to have an elective ultrasound done at a place in our hometown. What were other mom's experience with these? I'm not sure what to expect or if they are different than the ones at the doctor.

Re: Elective U/S

  • We had one done and it was similar to the one from the doctor insofar as you lay on a bed, they put gel on your belly, and look for the baby. The place we went to was nicer than a doctors office, the room had a cushy chair for my husband and comfy beaches all around where you could bring an entire entourage. The room was bigger and the screen was more high res. The people were more service oriented than at the doctor because they are there to make your experience good, not to check on the baby's health. The tech was much chattier and friendly than the techs at my OB (who are nice, but focused on their job, as they should be)!

  • @JemHolo2015 Thank you! This definitely answered my questions, I'm glad you had a good experience! :)
  • Loved mine. It was at a drs office. She was very friendly and I loved my pictures. My Dr. Enjoyed them as well. She thinks she looks like my youngest. <3
  • I had an elective with both pregnancys and I really enjoyed it. I felt like they focus on more of the fun things of seeing the baby where as the docts have set items they're looking for (which is completely understandable). It was a lot more comfortable and more relaxed. Both techs we had were super nice and you could tell they loved their jobs.
  • That is very exciting news, congrats! They are less likely to be wrong with a boy than a girl - after all, penises don't usually "disappear" but they can hide making them think that it is a girl when it is actually a boy. Boys are so much fun!!

My good friend got one of those done because she was told it was possibly a boy at 13 weeks but said it wasn't 100%. (i still think they shouldn't have even said that to her) She didn't have her next appointment until she was almost 22 weeks and couldn't wait that long lol. So at 18 weeks she got an elective U/S and from what she told me she loved the place and like PP said, they can focus more on the little cute details and it isn't as much as a serious environment as the regular one. But she walked out of there with a huge surprise because her little HE was actually SHE!!! :) I wish you all the best! I'm sure it will be an amazing experience :) Good luck mama!
Always hold on to hope ❤
  • Thank you all! So excited! We go
in about half an hour, and I'm really hoping we get a clear shot! Especially
since the tech yesterday said she was leaning more towards girl. So today will be the tie breaker! ;)
