Possible misdiagnosed blighted ovum UPDATE!!!

Hi, my name is Korin.
My husband and I found out we were expecting our third child on march 2nd with a positive test.
we havent been trying for a child, and use protection every time. However on february 15th we did have an "oops". I am 100% positive that this is the day we concieved as my LMP was feb 1-3 and I was most certainly ovulating.
Upon calling my midwife she scheduled me for my first u/s and visit on 3/19.
When we went into my u/s the technician found my gestational sac, however could not find the embryo. after waiting in the waiting room the midwife brought me back and told me she believed i had a blighted ovum and was to send me to the lab for blood tests. then i was sent home. later that night, the nurse called me and informed me that according to my Hcg levels (22k range) I should have an embryo with a beating heart, and since they didnt find it, they diagnosed me with a blighted ovum.
however I feel this is wrong. because A. my gestational sac was measuring 6 weeks, (right on with lmp and conception date) and my HCG levels were in the normal range.
the midwife didnt reccomend further testing, however i called them to request further testing. as i am not scheduling a d&c and my husband and i are certain with our dates.

Update: went in for blood test yesterday and recieved my results this morning.
Blood levels rose to 39k
And follow up ultrasound is scheduled for next week!

Please pray that I was misdiagnosed!!!!!

Re: Possible misdiagnosed blighted ovum UPDATE!!!

  • Good luck!! Praying for you. Everyone levels are different, just because they were high does not mean they will always see an embryo. Mine were 11,000 when the same thing happened to me.

  • I hate when doctors are so quick to call it a miscarriage. She could very well be right but definitely wait to do another ultrasound before taking further measures. So sorry you're going through this.

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this. I have been diagnosed twice with blighted ovum, good luck and your doubling numbers sound good to me!
  • Thanks everyone
  • So sorry you're going through this. A coworker just had the same exact thing and it was a wrong diagnosis. I would go back in and see another midwife or doc. Good luck!
  • I went though the exact same thing. I went to the hospital and was told I had a miscarriage (blighted ovum). The doctor was super harsh with me and said to go on with my life, as if there was no baby in there because there wasn't, and told me to forget about the idea of having a baby In there. This was a few weeks ago, I went to my first ob/gyn appointment this morning and I am 8 weeks and 5 days along. So the previous doctor completely misdiagnosed my situation, I was just too early to hear a heart beat. Don't loose hope:) I lost hope for a few seconds, but I did my research and checked my hcg levels, I'll keep you in my prayers:)
  • Aaaahhhhh omg thats great news!! Praying they were wrong :D
  • Aaawwww thats amazing news girl!! GOD is good and congratulations! !!!!!
  • That's great!!!!!!!!! Happy uneventful pregnancy to you!!!!!!!!! :D

I am going through the same exact same broke down in the drs office yesterday felt like there was no hope and after researching lastnigt drs are doing these ultra sounds too early and mis diagnose so many women and urge them for d&c when there hasn't even been time for the baby to develope I am so angry at my dr they are guessing I am 6 weeks and telling me it's over my sac is growing and my levels are okay but to tell me it's over is so wrong they have no idea how far along I really am I haven't had a period since jan getting a second opinion. Glad your story came out so positive gives me hope as I was so devastated yesterday.
  • Prayers for you! I am 8 weeks 4 days and today the us was 8 weeks 3 days but just sac no embryo. Dr called to ask me to get labs drawn on monday and another ultrasound just in case. I have a friend who is a tech and said usually not a good sign and they should see and hear something by 8 weeks. I am holding on to the slight hope my doctor is giving me for Monday!
  • Yay! So happy you got good news! Congrats wishing you a healthy happy pregnancy!
  • Yay thats fantastic congratulations!! We have the same due date :)
  • Yay for good news!
  • sadly there are too many stories of doctors jumping to a negative conclusion. we just went through this over the last 4 weeks and it was horrendous! follow your motherly instincts! God is GREAT!!!
  • My doctor told me that same thing hun and both of our dates are exact so i might see you in delivery
  • Yay!! Loving the positive story! Congrats!!!

Definitely wait it out, and keep pushing for blood draws and tests. Sometimes baby is hard to see up to 10 weeks! Don't lost faith!

I would still hold out hope if I were you. Like I just stated, some people have trouble seeing baby until 10 weeks. I have a tilted uterus which is why the first tech didn't see the baby. That and she was not a designated ob ultrasound tech, she was a fill in.
Always get a second opinion and set of eyes to look at your ultrasound
  • I have a ultrasound monday at the same place but asked for a different tech. Nothing against the girl that saw my Wednesday but a different person feels right
  • My "miscarriage" will be three in a few months. Most rotten child I've had so far. Sometimes doctors make major mistakes....
