How to find a heartbeat on a doppler

Hi, I'm 16 weeks pregnant and I've seen my doctor twice with very good heart rate on the doppler both times and everything looking good. I work at a hospital and we have access to dopplers so I've tried to use them twice since my last doctor visit and I only hear my own heart beat. I am very nervous as to why I am not finding the heart beat especially if I am finding my own. Please help!!

  • Are you using the gel? I read that you should start from the pelvic bone and slowly move upward; at 16 weeks the baby should be between your pelvic bone and belly button.

I put a lot of gel on. Maybe I'm doing it too low, I haven't gone higher than my pelvis.

I'm 15 weeks and baby is usually less than an inch above my hairline, but sometimes even lower. My baby likes to stay to the right side almost all the time, about an inch from the center. Your baby could obviously like a different spot. I don't use a lot of gel, but using a lot won't prevent you from finding it, it's just messy. Go slow when looking and when you try a spot, kind of angle the probe different directions to really be thorough. I wouldn't worry at all about not finding it. My SIL is 20 weeks pregnant and can't find it herself. It just takes practice and patience.
  • I hope that will work, it's just hard to be patient at work
  • I just received my rental Doppler last night and tried it out. I'm 16 weeks and found the heartbeat about an inch about my hairline as well and about an inch to the left. However, it did take me a good few minutes to find it, and even when I did, I could listen for a maybe 20 seconds and then the baby would move and I would lose it again. I think I have a super wiggly baby ... in all my ultrasounds it's been very active lol. It does take time and patience though, so if you can try it on a break when you have a good 15 minutes, that might help!
