When to stop having sex?

I will be 28 weeks on Friday which is the start of the 3rd trimester. When do the husband and I need to stop having sex? Can you have sex up until you go into labor?

Re: When to stop having sex?

  • As long as it's still comfortable for you!

  • I've had sex up until delivery with my first 4. Unless your doc instructs you not to. Or it becomes to uncomfortable or even painful then your fine.
  • Ok thank yall!
  • Old wives tale says having sex will help induce labor but it won't do anything unless mother nature is ready to get things started :) If i make it to 40 weeks, i might need to go at it daily just in case lol

Yeah but I heard that works better if you actually enjoy it . . . at 41 weeks, sure, sounds super fun.  To the original question, your doc might put you on pelvic rest if there are concerns about preterm labor, otherwise go for it.

All the books I've read indicate it's not an old wives tale. Sex releases oxytocin which can stimulate contractions! Same with nipple stimulation. So I'll be having lots of it after 38 weeks lol.

Apparently semen also changes the cervix.  I researched/tried everything when I was two weeks late with my first.  This time I am going to just try waiting patiently!  And acupuncture, I am fairly certain that worked for me.  I'm going to schedule my first appoint for 40.5 weeks.

  • For sure.. Unless you have something going on or are high risk and your dr has advised you not to
  • I heard on a podcast today that there is something in sperm that is also used in pharmaceutical inductions, so intercourse 'could' get things started sooner than they would without intercourse, although it's unlikely. In the material I've heard and read it's been fairly across the board that medical professionals have advised that continuing to have sex as late into the pregnancy as you can is healthy! Baby generally will decide to come when he or she is good and ready.

Besides, I'm pretty sure the few weeks following delivery sex won't be something your jumping up and down to do, so I would take every opportunity before then!
  • Keep at it ntil you don't want to or your doctor tells you to stop. Sex is good for you!

I think most Drs have you wait 6 weeks after delivery to have sex again.

I've heard 6 weeks as well!! Seems like a very long time, but I've heard horror stories from woman who didn't take their doctors advice and ended up regretting it. :(
  • yes you need to wait about 6 weeks after delivery to have sex, so as long as your doctor has not restricted you, you should enjoy it while you still can! :P

  • 6 weeks may seem like a long time for your husband or SO, but it was still pretty uncomfortable for me at 6 wks out!!
  • I'm one of the unlucky high risk ladies. Haven't had sex since 13 weeks. 5 more weeks til my cerclage comes out at 36 weeks, and I'm allowed to have sex!!!! I can't wait!!!
