Summer sleepwear for newborns

I was looking over my registry and it occurred to me - I have no idea what LO should wear to bed in the summer. On the one hand, I'm thinking a onesie should be good, but I've read that newborns like the security of being swaddled. However, I'm concerned about LO overheating if swaddled, considering how hot and humid my area gets in the summer. While I'm sure that in the end this will all come down to trial and error, I'd like to be as prepared as possible so I'll hopefully have whatever sleepwear is appropriate for baby when the time comes. So, second time moms, third time moms, and others with more experience than I do, what, in your opinion, is the best summer sleepwear for newborns? Am I thinking correctly that a onesie and maybe swaddling are the way to go, or have you found something else to be better? Thanks! :)

Re: Summer sleepwear for newborns

  • I noticed that a lot of people comment about this... But I know for me my house can be colder in summer than winter (DH loves AC)... So I assume she will be wearing cotton sleepers and maybe a halo sleep sack.... DS slept well in sleeps sacks and they make really light ones for summer sleeping.

  • They also make those gowns which make diaper changes easy!
  • We have a/c so our house is around 74 degrees. I'm planning on sleep gowns or zip up sleepers (you don't want to deal with the buttons in the middle of the night) and a sleep sack. We will also be running a small fan in the room to reduce SIDS risk

I never saw a sleep sack with buttons? The halo ones zipper and are super easy for middle of night diaper changes as you don't even need to take them off fully!
  • @laurendutch never mind just realized you said "and a sleep sack" ... I'll blame that on pregnancy brain (everyone else uses it on me when I forget something so I might as well use it for myself hahaha)
  • Good point about the AC!

I've heard that one reason why the Aden & Anais brand swaddlers are so popular is because they are so light and don't cause swaddled baby to be overheated.

    Can anyone speak to this?

I can't speak for their sleep sacks but I love their whole line of bibs and burp cloths.... I bet the muslin is wonderful for summer sleeping and the brand is really good quality.

I like Halo brand for sleep sacks because they have so much variety for all different temperature needs but I will check out the Aden and Anais ones as well.

Thanks, everyone! We do have central air but last summer relied heavily on fans and open windows to keep electricity costs down. We're not sure yet what we're going to do this summer - baby's health/safety are of top priority so we may just deal with the higher electric bills. I'll definitely look into the sleep sacks, those sound like a good investment! Thanks again for the input! :)

I loved the Aden & Anais Muslin blankets for swaddling, and they will be perfect with onesies to provide cool shade and coverage on hot summer days when you are out and about.
    ETA:
They also make great "blankies" for toddlers. My son loves his and it is nice to have plenty to wash so he always has a clean one for security and clean up of snot and food spills. And when a toddler gets a stomach virus, they are ideal to spread over yourself while waiting to get puked on (gross, I know) and a breeze to clean up.
  • Rule of thumb for babies: however many layers you are wearing plus one. That may mean a short sleeved onesie and an Aden&Anais sleepsack.
  • I had an October baby last time, but will use either a light-weight cotton sleeper with zippers (snaps and buttons at 2AM are for fools!) or a sleep gown for quick diaper changes and an A&A swaddle blanket (they are amazing and worth their weight in gold!). Our house is usually around 72 at night with the AC in the summer.

  • We registered for the Aden and Anais Muslin swaddle blankets. They seem like they'll be great for summertime sleeping!
  • My first DD did well with a onsie and a light swaddling blanket. Some babies hate swaddling so be prepaired for that. If you don't have AC a onsies maybe okay but you may want to get thin footie type PJs for cooler nights. Gerber makes these in thin material, I have gotten them at Target. This will also depend on your baby, my DD is always warm. Best best buy two options, see what works best then buy more.
