When do newborns stop sleeping during the day?

For the last three days, DD hasn't slept much. She's up at 6/7, and may drift off for 30 minutes in the sling, but if I take her out, or I move her BAM! She wakes up. Then she wants to eat again and sleeps for like 5 minutes. She's happy though, and will even happily coo to herself or watch me run around for a bit. Eventually she'll squawk and I'll pick her up again. She will only sleep again at like 2/3 in the afternoon. She sleeps well at night, but anyone else experience this? An I wrong to assume she should be sleeping? Lol she's 5 weeks tomorrow and used to eat, poop, then nap in a very predictable pattern. Now what?!?!
(I'm not worried, just curious and secretly hoping she sleeps more so I can nap!)

We are in the exact same boat. DS will be 5 weeks on Friday and has basically stopped napping during the day outside of some small cat naps here and there. He's very happy during the day...just wide awake! He sleeps well during the night (waking up every couple hours to eat but generally going right back down). Interested to see what others are experiencing!

Edited: Thought I should update my post. LO decided to sleep ALL day yesterday. Who knows what's going to happen today! I've learned that flexibility is my best friend at this point!

  • Same. I used to be able to bank in a nap from 10:30-1:30 and get chores done. Now LO naps from 10-10:45 and is up until another small nap around 2/3.
  • Wow I hope to get there one day. Mine will be 5 weeks Thursday and has been more alert but still sleeps a good part of the day away.
  • My LO is 3 weeks. He sleeps a majority of the day away but is hard to get down to sleep at night. Everyone tells me to keep him up during the day but apart from an atomic bomb going off, he sleeps through a lot! I say as long as they are still putting on weight and sleeping at night then you're going in the right direction.
  • Just when I think I have her schedule figured out, she changes it up on me.
  • At this age there isn't going to be much of a routine just yet.... The best way to get them to learn the difference is to make sure it's super bright during the day and then dim the lights when you want it to be "nighttime" .... And when they wake up at night - keep it dark keep it quiet and they will learn it's not the time to stay up and play..... Babies don't really start to learn a set routine until about 8 weeks so don't stress , you will get there in no time!

My son is 5 weeks and naps 3 times a day. Then sleeps all night And only wakes up twice to feed and get a diaper change then goes right back to sleep. Every baby is different (:
