Transition from breast to Sippy cup

Good morning ladies,
My DS is 9 months old and we've exclusively nursed. I've tried introducing bottles a few times but he was never interested so I never pushed the issue.

I would like to start introducing the sippy cup but I'm not really sure if there is a certain cup I should try or even one I should stay away from? My other children were all on bottles by this point so I didn't have this issue with them.

I did get him to take a drink out of a regular cup the other day. It was just a cup of water I had. I'm not sure if maybe a free flowing cup would be best? One he doesn't have to work too hard to get the liquid from? What do you think?

Re: Transition from breast to Sippy cup

  • My son also never took a bottle, and we weaned straight to a regular (non-sippy) cup, but then I was really lax about spills. I think if you want to do a sippy, you should just go for the free-flow type so he learns the actual drinking motion as opposed to sucking, and then there's one less thing you'll have to eventually wean him off.

  • My children really like the straw style sippy cup. No need to tilt head back. I also used a straw cup, so they also learned by watching me.

Just starting with an open cup is great too. That is what my sister does.
  • At what age did you start the cup or sippy? I have to start my 7 month old on a bottle or cup due to work. I've tried different bottles, my husband giving the bottle while I'm out, etc. he seems to drink from a cup. Also, do you do 4 or 5 feedings of 5-6 oz all from an open cup? Thanks!
