Re: glucose testing

  • I have to take my one hour in two weeks. I'll probably fail (again) I was tested early last pregnancy too and diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 14 weeks yuck.

  • I have never had gestational diabetes but my last baby was 10 pounds, 11 ounces so they will be testing me 3x throughout the pregnancy instead of just once. My one hour test i had very high blood sugar. I go for the 3 hour test tomorrow. They believe some moms dont develope G.D until the end of the pregnancy so it gets missed on the 24 week glucose test, therefore babies are big and they dont know why. They told me that since my glucose levels are already high, there is a good chance they will induce me early to avoid big baby complications during birth. I delivered all 3 of my children vaginally, 8 pounds & 9 pounds, went fine, but my last 10 pound, 11 ounce baby's big shoulders got stuck on the way out.i had 6 nurses pushing on my stomach while the doctor had to break his arm-the bone between his elbow and shoulder to get him out. Baby & mama were both in shock afterwards. Thank God my son has no nerve damage in his arm. So they will keep a extra close eye on the size of the baby and my glucose levels this time.,
  • @amazing450 Are you overweight? Just curious. I failed the 1rst test with my 1st baby too. But passed the 2nd. Are they prepping you in any way on things to do before your test?

  • I have to schedule to take mine at 10 weeks :/ Not looking forward to taking the test again or the chance I will fail
  • I did the 2 hour one about a week ago.  I have no history of gd and dd was 6 lbs 11 oz, but my midwife wanted me to do it early because of my being overweight and because I have PCOS, which means I'm insulin resistant.  I don't know the results of that one though, and probably won't until my next appointment on Apr 6.  She did say that she'll have me do the 3 hour test around 25/26 weeks though.
  • Nope, I've always been petite. It just runs in my family. Luckily for me it has always gone away after pregnancy.

  • They had me take one at 8 weeks and I passed with flying colors. I'll have another one done at the normal time as well.
  • I failed my 1 hour big time and had Gestational Diabetes class yesterday. I have to see a diabetes fetal medician specialist and test my blood sugar. They put me on a diet. Good luck to all of you

I had to take the one-hour along with my initial blood tests because my BMI makes me "overweight." (BMIs are bullsh*t.) I passed.

I was told not to do anything differently for the 1-hour, but the next one (2-hour?) you're supposed to fast for 14 hours. BUT MAKE SURE YOU DRINK WATER. My last blood test was early in the AM and I didn't eat or drink anything beforehand. It took forever to get my blood because my veins weren't hydrated enough.
  • @VioletandRose really?14 hours of fasting?? I do mine tomorrow and the fast is only 8 hours. 14 seems like torture.
  • I have to do an early one between 14-15 weeks because I am overweight....also not sure if it's because I am 40 as well. Is there preparation for the first test?

  • No preparation for me for the first test @gerbies . Eat and drink as normal.
  • I had to take mine and it sucks butt. I have symptoms of diabetes no fun.

@gerbies ask your Dr if you need to do anything. Seems like there's not a lot of consistency with the preparations, but some drs require fasting etc.

  • I think generally there is no prep for the one hour except eat a normal breakfast and not a ton of simple carbs (like a bag of M&m's!
  • Yeah I'll be taking my 1 hour test on Monday. I have no history of GD and baby was 6lbs 7oz. I am overweight though. Haven't been able to lose any weight since that pregnancy.

  • I've never tested early like you guys, but I guess I wasn't at risk in anyway.
I did fail the 1hr though. I later found out from other people that you're not supposed to have anything sugary of major carbs the night before your test. I passed the 3hr and was fine, but it was horrible! I was in the office for 4 hours starving with 4 blood draws. Luckily blood work doesn't bother me. They also make your drink extra sugary for the 3hr.
