Hard Stools

My son is almost 3 months old and has been exclusively formula feeding. We had started him on Enfamil Gentlease but it caused him to be incredibly gassy and fussy, and we have switched him to several other formulas within Enfamil, and now he is on Enfamil Prosobee Soy. It seemed that it was doing better on his tummy, however, he is now having a much more difficult time having BM's. And when he does, his poops are hard pellet-like stools before eventually becoming soft. I'm not sure if it's the soy or the brand, I've tried prune juice and nothing has changed. I'm considering changing to a different brand. What should I do?

Re: Hard Stools

  • We have been using Similac Advance Organic and around two months our LO started having hard poops. Our doctor wasn't too concerned unless it seemed like he was in pain passing a bowel movement. She did recommend we try using a probiotic and that has helped tremendously.

  • Our doctor has said the same, but he is in pain when having a BM, it's affecting his sleeping routine as well. He'll wake up every other hour trying to poop and I'll have to take a q tip in order to help him poop because his BM's are too hard for him to push out on his own.
  • Are you still on Similac Advanced Organic?
  • Yes, we stuck with Similac Advanced Organic — because our doctor said no need to change if the probiotic corrects things. If he's in pain, you might want to talk your doctor again as ours said to call her back if he shows signs of being in pain.

Prune juice on an infant... that is a new one for me. Will discuss this with my pediatrician.

  • My 3 mo ds was perfect on enfamil newborn but then had a hard time on enfamil infant and honest co formula and instead of doing a stool softener my pedi suggested switching to enfamil reguline. It's helped tremendously! He has no problems at all anymore!!!
  • My boy has the same issue with difficult times having a bm. He is on similac sensitive formula and breast milk. When my boy gets constipated our pediatrician suggested pear juice. She said pear is the best for constipation, then prune and last apple. It has to be 100%pure juice though, not from concentrate or with added sugars. My baby now get 2oz of pear juice 1-3 times per week and he has been doing much better
  • My baby had the same with her bowel. I mix the water with evian and it works very well. What you also can do is to give your baby water evian between the feedings. My baby doesn't like to drink water that is why I mix it with regular water when I make her bottle
