Gaining weight, constipation, miserable

okay I'll start with my weight gain.

I started at 95-97lbs before pregnancy and I am a FTM. I was in a healthy range for my height and have always been petite. In the first trimester, I gained 10 pounds! I'm not exactly sure what it was from. Probably less exercise and increasing my food intake. (Nothing bad, just eating more) then I've gone to the doctor and asked him about it. His response was "you could have used a few more pounds on you!" I was a little annoyed but tried to work out more and make healthy choices becuase I read about people losing weight or just gaining 1-3. I went back the following month and went up 4lbs! I can't win! Now I just checked, I'm 17 weeks 1 day, and up 17 lbs!!!! I know I have been stress eating too...At this rate I will have so much to lose when it's all over... :(

To add to how great I feel with all this weight gain I've been constipated to the point where my abdomen hurts to the touch and it's hard to eat. My doctor recommended milk of magnesia. I took it and haven't had "luck" but now my stomach pain is worse. I feel bloated and my stomach hurts all the time. Any advice?

I don't have any advice about the weight gain but I take Colace for constipation and it works really well. Check with your doctor before you try it but he should say it's safe. I only had to take 2 pills before I got some relief. I hope you feel better soon!

  • I have - prior to pregnancy- intermitten consipation then Ill have a ton of diarhea and then itll start all over again. From all my tests it came down to diet. I wasnt getting enough fiber in my diet. I started nutriblasts with the nutribullet and then Ill add coconut oil to it which they say is great for pregnancy and constipation. fiber pills from metamucil if im not in the mood to have a smoothie. For your issue right now I would go buy something called a Fleet enema. I know it sounds gross but trust me. You may be so backed up that your poop is dry from being in there and alot of other reasons and may need to be kinda unstuck. Especially if milk of magnesia isnt helping. This enema can be bought at cvs wallgreens and is usually on the bottom shelf of the fiber constipation aisle .

Aain I know this sounds weird but it will definitely help. I would also say from reading your post about 6 lbs or more of your gain may be stool.

  • If you were underweight for your BMI, doctors usually recommend gaining more weight than say someone with an average or overweight BMI. My guess is it's mostly water weight, the extra blood/fluid you have in you now, and some bloating from the constipation. I'm almost 16 weeks and have gained 10 lbs and I started out slightly above average in BMI. However, I've only noticed weight gain in my belly and chest. I've been having one Activia yogurt a day to help with the constipation and it's been helping, plus it tastes good! I felt much more bloated before I started taking Activia. I wouldn't be concerned about the weight gain unless your doctor becomes concerned ... if you were on the smaller side before, chances are you'll lose all the weight almost immediately after having the baby anyways (at least that's what's happened with all of my smaller friends!).
  • @KimberlyF88 we are in the same boat.... I believe I've gained 10lbs in first trimester and feeling down on myself bc I've read 1-5lb is normal, I just posted the same concerns as well! I don't know if you had any nausea, but that had hindered my exercise and nutritious eating. I'm a personal trainer so always been fit. Just know You can change it around anytime! I'm starting to feel better, eat well and getting back into exercise - you can do it too! You don't have to wait for the baby to be born to get your body back ☺️The constipation and bloating is probably adding about 3-5 extra lbs also even more! You'd be surprised. I recommend Dolcolax it's pricier but works. I've had issues with that even before pregnancy. Sometimes extra fiber will actually upset your tummy before it helps it. Clear yourself out first then work on the fiber :) hope I've helped!
  • I've been drinking prune juice every morning since I found out I was pregnant and haven't had problems with constipation, so I highly recommend it as a preventative! I hope you can find something that helps, good luck!

  • This may sound really bad to some who frown on caffeine...when I'm constipated & nothing is working a Starbucks coffee always does the trick. I tried the prunes & magnesium but Starbucks never let's me down.
  • For constipation I've found daily fiber is the only thing that helps mixed with prune juice. Its miserable On know how you feel. As far is weight gain? What do you expect your a small girl and growing a baby....its normal you would gain . my girlf friend gained 12 lbs in her first trimester she is a size 8. I have not gained any because I am heavier and do not need it. Your body is gaining because it needs it. Enjoy this beautiful time and gift you have been given. If your eating healthy then don't worry mama. This is the only time in life people expect you to gain weight lol enjoy!
  • The fiber that works wonder is this...take one table spoon mixed with prune juice daily. It has been so nice to go to the bathroom https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002RWUNYM/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1427304474&sr=8-2&keywords=psyllium+husk&dpPl=1&dpID=41q731o4NtL&ref=plSrch&pi=AC_SY200_QL40

My last pregnancy I gained a pound a week the whole pregnancy which only ended up being 40 lbs. The recommended for small women is 35..I lost it all within a few months..please dont worry about that too much. Steady weight gain is what is important and breastfeeding will help shed lbs.
