Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Intro - practitioner negligence? I think I need a new doc!

Oh my gosh you guys! Where do I start ! I need some advice! I'm new to posting but have been reading the board for awhile. Sorry this is so long but my situation is really a mess!

Been TTC 10 mos and I'm 35 so decided time to see the Fertility nurse at my OBs office. Went to see her Thursday 3/12. Had the consult and a ton of blood was drawn, and then had an ultrasound since I was AF day 3. While doing ultrasound she found a possible fibroid that was pretty large. She also found a little "blip" that she was unsure of. - maybe another fibroid? She then commented that my uterine lining was thick and I asked what that means. She said usually that you are prego. So we stopped and she did a urine test - negative.

So she gave me the protocol for the infertility testing and asked me to schedule an HSG for the following week days 6-10. She told me to take some Advil an hour before and also because I have possible cervical stenosis gave me Cytotec to take 6 hours before the HSG. For this that don't know, cytotec is used to open/dilate your cervix or induce miscarriage.

When I called to make the HSG appt they told me to bring in a blood pregnancy test. I called my doc and was told to come in ASAP for one. This was Tuesday AM and my HSG was schedule for Weds AM. So I went in right away for the blood test so it would be back on time. Apparently they had only done the urine test at the infertility appt.

So, my period was really heavy. Like the worst I've ever had, but it seemed to be slowing down on Tuesday so I planned to keep the HSG appt (you can't have while on your period). I woke up in the middle of the night Wednesday to take the Cytotec and went back to bed, and when I woke up there was blood everywhere and it smelled really bad. I called the radiologist and told them and they rescheduled me to give my period more time to stop. Then I called my OB and they said to come in and get more cytotec for my new appt Friday.

So I go about my day Weds feeling really crappy and weak, I figured because my period was so bad.

Weds night I get a frantic call from fertility nurse. She tells me the blood test Tuesday was positive for pregnancy and I'm likely miscarrying and she needs to see me first thing Thursday and not to do anything or take any meds.

I go to see her and she seems stressed. I ask her why did I get a negative urine test last Friday if I was prego? I told her I had done several tests at home all negative but this blood test was positive. She told me that some women don't expel hcg in their urine and I seem to be one of them. Wtf!!!

She does another ultrasound and can't really tell what is happening but thinks I'm miscarrying - (she does see what seems to be a large blood clot but not much else)or possibly have a molar pregnancy - and may have been 8-9 weeks not 5 because I had so much irregular bleeding and periods who knows. She drew more blood and told me to come back Monday again to see if levels are coming down. (Oh and also diagnosed me hypothyroid, yay, but that's a whole other story).

I'm so confused and mad. I don't even know if this whole convoluted story makes sense but what it comes down to is yes, I had period like bleeding when I came to see her on 3/12. But, she saw signs of pregnancy on the ultrasound that day despite the negative urine test.

So my point is this - was it not completely negligent of her to order an HSG and prescribe for me to take cytotec before confirming I was not pregnant? How was I to know that there are women that don't show pregnancy hormones in their urine? Yes, I was already bleeding when I saw her 3/12 but after taking that cytotec is when the bleeding was out of control and had the bad smell others gave reported with miscarriage.

In other words. I think my doctor caused my miscarriage. Is that crazy? All I know if on 3/17 I tested positive for pregnancy and didn't know it, and took Cytotec the morning of 3/18 only to wake up in a pool of blood.

I'm a mess. I wish I never took those stupid pills :( anyone else that has been prescribed HSG did your doctor confirm via blood that you were not prego?

Holy smokes... I have no advice for you, but I'm so so sorry for your loss. I've never heard of anything like that happening... I'd be pissed.
I'd definitely find a new doctor.

  • I have to second 4N6s, I have no idea what to tell you here. I'm so sorry for you!
  • Thanks girls. Now that I've started to come grips with what actually happened I'm so mad. A friend who is a nurse agreed that I should have been given a blood test prior to being given cytotec. She's suggesting I consdsr speaking to an attorney but I just want to deal with my health first. I'm going to my regular doctor tomorrow to discuss what happened and decide what to do. I still have to wrap my mind around the loss since I was unaware of the pregnancy :(
