getting induced!!!

I am 38 weeks today and next this Monday the 30th I'm getting induced. I'm not dilated at all and this is my first baby, can you tell me what to expect like how long it usually takes or what exactly they do besides pitocin? Please and thank you :)

Re: getting induced!!!

  • I was induced with my first but I was already 4 cm and 80% effaced. I got pitocin (oxytocin) via IV. They start you on a slow drip and increase in incriments. Thus, the pain is tolerable in the beginning and for most people becomes untollerable the further dilated you are. I got an epidural (couldn't feel it compared to contractions) and within an hour my son was born. MOST women deliver within 6-12 hours, not an hour like me, so expect a little bit longer and stay relaxed. Also, they will NOT feed you once you get to the hospital so EAT before you go!!! They don't care if it's 36 hrs later- no baby, no food! Good luck!

  • Normally for first baby, they won't induce til after your due date.

    Is everything ok?
  • @ frenchyj she's right. I had it with my first one. 38 hour only allowed to drink. They didn't care. So eat before you go!!!!

  • I'm being induced April 7th. Following this post to see what to expect. I know every hospital and policies are different but I am so nervous about the induction. My water broke with my daughter so I have no idea what I'm up for besides what I've seen on google.

  • Im also being induced with my first at 39 weeks on the 7th of April! Not every doctor practices the same. It is very the norm with my doctor to induce at 39 weeks if that is what you would like even if there are absolutely no medical problems. He gives you the choice. My sister was induced with her first at 39 weeks. (We use the same doctor.) She was checked in at 5:30 that morning and had her baby around 5 that after noon. Contractions starting at very easy and then progressing to unbearable at which time she recieved her epidural. Good luck! Hope to hear about your experience after as well! :)
  • I was induced with both my children. With my son, they started the pitocin at 7 am roughly and he was born a bit after 3 PM. When I had my daughter, they started the pitocin around 7 PM and she was born the following morning just before 11. This entire time was not spent in active labor. The contractions start slow and will gradually get stronger. With both kids, the doctor had to break my water. When this happens, the contractions become incredibly strong. I would recommend asking your doctor or nurses to turn down the pitocin if they need to break your water because it's almost an instant change and with my daughter I found it almost unbearable. I used an epidural with both and found it to be extremely helpful. I've heard that contractions with inductions are stronger but cannot say for sure as I've never experienced labor naturally. As stated by others, once induced, you will get no food and very little to drink so try to prepare. Also, for both of mine I was hooked up and constantly monitored. They monitored contractions and baby's HR. I'm not sure if there is much else I can offer information wise but I hope this helps. Just know that soon you'll be holding your beautiful baby! Congrats
  • I didn't get pitocin. I was induced vaginally with something called cervidil (I don't know how to spell it). I started with no dilation or effacement. It worked wonderfully for me. Definitely eat before you get induced like PP said.
  • 39w induction for BP issues with my first baby...went in for cervical ripening at 6pm Sunday...didn't hold my baby until 11pm Monday.  It sucked and I would never do it again willingly.  I needed to be induced for medical concerns...not convenience.

If you don't need an induction for medical reasons...wait it out.

  • They are inducing me because my baby is a big one and the doctors says it's safe to get him out. Thank you ladies for the comments. I will be getting pitocin and the pills behind my cervix. I hope it all goes fast and easy for me and my baby boy :)
  • I'm getting induced Monday the 30th to around 5:30am.. This is my third baby.. With my first I went in for induction n didn't have him until 12:57 pm that afternoon.. Defiantly eat cause you can't eat until after baby is born just in case they have to do an emergency c section..

I got induced with my first at 40 weeks due to GD.
We checked into the hospital and they started an iv drip of pitocin. I went to bed for the night, and awoke to pee a few times (difficult with the iv attached). In the morning I was only dilated 2cm, so they continued to up the pitocin throughout the day. Contractions got stronger, but weren't unbearable. Once I was about 5 cm, I got the epidural (not even because the pain was too much to handle yet, but because they were super busy and said I needed to get it then, or they might be busy when I got further along).
They broke my water right before the epidural.
At about 10pm that evening (so about 26 hours after starting pitocin), I was 10cm and ready to push. I push for two 1/2 hours (yep, you read that correctly!!!!) and he came out with his arm resting on his head, which is why he required so much pushing. He was born about 30 hours after the start of pitocin.

Best, most exhausting day of my life. This time, no GD, so I am going into labor naturally assuming I don't go wayyy past my due date.

Good luck. Mine was long, but all in all not a bad experience. With the epidural everything was relatively pain free and bearable. It was more the wait to meet the little man that was the worst part. Just go, relax, let your body progress, and listen to the nurses.
  • When I got induced with my daughter everything was normal as all the pp's have said.. except my bp was a little high so they gave me demerol through my IV so with that & the epidural I honestly didn't feel a contraction the whole time & slept 12 out of the 18 hours I was in labor... people will tell you childbirth is excruciating pain the whole way through and most are... but there are cases where they aren't. Mine was a breeze & I'm praying that you have the same easy experience I had :) good luck girl!
  • I got induced Sunday at 37 weeks because of my bp and I was boarder line pre clampsia .i got the cervidil to ripen my cervix followed by pitosin to start contractions, then the dr ended up having to break my water ... Didn't dilate more then 2 cms with only 70% effacement from 3:30 am to 1:10 pm .. Plus my daughters heart rate was being effected by the pitosin so I had an emergency c section . All was okay afterwards though :) . Praying you have better Luck then I did !
  • @ChasityDB you got lucky !!! Omg the cervidal gave me baby ones I was like oh ok I can handle this , then after the dr broke my water and I got the big boys for only about 30 mins before I got my epidural... My poor husband almost had permanent nail marks in his hand and wrist!
  • I had one induced and one naturally. Induction with pitocin hurts 100x worse but you can get an epidural and it's fine. Put it this way, with my first I was on the hospital bed about to die (pitocin) and with my second I walked into the hospital at 10cm, filled out all the billing paperwork and than went to the back to get ready for what I thought was them stopping my labor! Lol I was only 34 weeks and calm as a button. (No pitocin). I would do pitocin again though.
  • I got induced with my last 2 and had similar experiences, pitocin and Dr. had to break my water. The only thing I'm not reading on any of the pp's my Dr ordered an enema done before the nurses started anything! It was horrible and so embarrassing with my husband in the room and he could hear everything! I don't think it was administered to help labor but more so I wouldn't go while pushing I guess. I tried to talk my way out of it by saying I hadn't eaten all after noon but since my Dr had written a prescription for it they had to do it. My 1st induction was 13 hrs and the second 11 hrs. Be patient and stay calm the last thing you want is to get stressed and frustrated and need a c-section. Good luck, and I hope you have a memorable, happy healthy delivery!
  • @mrscasey306 oh bless you girl!!! I'm hoping this next one is smooth also... I just wanted to share my story with OP bc everyone wants to tell you horror stories & I wanted to let her know there is hope for a smooth, relatively painless delivery. The worst pain I had honestly was when my epidural was administered. & that was mainly bc I'm a big baby lol.
  • Omg! I have never heard of a Dr. ordering an enema during an induction!!!! I hope you refuse if it's ordered again.
  • @jovill12 You can refuse any kind of treatment whether or not a script was written. The dr may not be happy with you, and depending on the severity of the effects of refusing treatment, the dr may also refuse to work with you any further. However, they can't force you into anything. You have to consent to all treatment performed.
  • I was induced at 38 plus 5. Had membrAnes swept at 38 weeks and was 5 cm at that time. Lost mucus plug next day. When I was being induced they checked for cervical changes and I was 6cm and 80% effaced. She broke my water and got iv ready for pitocin in case that didn't work. 28minutes later my son was born. Contractions started immediately fast and hard. No break time between. I used gas at first but it was so fast it didn't have any impact as I only used it twice. For a ftm this was scary because I had no idea what to expect in terms of pain and what the contraction would feel like. My advice to you is to just go with it. There's no way to plan every detail of your delivery. Just let the Dr know before your induction what what your preferEnces are before pain starts. Good luck to you!!
  • My first child i went in at 39 week appt and they induced me that day because he had run out of room and wasnt moving. They sent me to the hospital and i got all hooked up. I was already dilated to 2 and 50% effaced. They started with a pill to see if my body would naturally fall into labor but my contractions were not strong enough so they started the pitocin drip. He broke my water around 4 in the afternoon and i had my son at 11:04pm. It went quickly once i finally gave in to the epidural! I was stuck at a 4 for a long time because i couldnt relax and once i let them give me that epidural i had him quickly :) good luck.
  • Induction started yesterday at 6:00 pm at 36+3 due to growth restriction. Small cramping started at around 1:00am and was monitored all night as baby will be tiny and has a higher chance of not being able to tolerate natural labor. Checked at 8:00 am and wasn't dilated at all. Rechecked at 10:00 am and was 1cm dilated. They had me take the cervadill yesterday and everything was okay until this morning baby started to go into distress so they took it out. Waited 5 hours for them to finally come back and give me the balloon to open up my cervix and I've had that in now since 2:45 pm.. Contractions are very painful but got a shot of morphine that seems to be working. Have the epidural catheter in but they think it's too early to start giving it to me as much as I would love it! This is a much longer process than I expected as a FTM and I'm definitely running out of steam.. All I want to do is eat!!!

Props to all the women out there that go through labor.. It is not for the weak
