Severe headaches all day long

I'm 15 weeks today. Basically as soon as my nausea ended (at almost exactly the 12 week mark) these headaches began. They've been bad but manageable up until last week. Suddenly they are really severe (I'd say a 7 on a scale of 1-10) and they last all day long. I've had a non-stop headache for the past 2 days. I stayed home from work today because it's so bad.

I talked to my doctor about it on Friday. She said it's probably just the pregnancy hormones, and that there's not much I can do about it except to stay hydrated, make sure I'm eating, take tylenol. I've been doing all that and still, headaches. I should mention my blood pressure is really low - I think it was like 102/50 on Friday. Could that have anything to do with it?

Have any of you had a similar experience with headaches in the second trimester? Have you tried anything that's worked to get rid of them? I thought by now my body would have acclimated to the hormones and these symptoms would be less severe but no such luck.

Any advice you all can provide is greatly appreciated.

Re: Severe headaches all day long

  • I'm going through the headaches but not the low blood pressure. It's terrible. I did fivtylenol a few times but don't feel it's working. Obviously I'm drinking enough I am peeling every 15 minutes. Sorry I don't have more to add. I'm 15 weeks today too, I hope it sorts itself out.

  • It's the absolute WORST, @bpv101283. Very sorry you're going through this too, but know you're not alone. Must be something about that Sept. 14 due date  ;)
  • I too have been dealing with all day long headaches. They don't go away no matter how much water I drink, or how many Tylenol I take.
Sometimes I'll drink some mountain dew and the caffeine will help call it a little.
  • I have been massaging the bridge of my nose and under my eyebrows before putting a cold compress over my eyes. I find if I can convince someone else to do the massage it helps more, because you can focus more on relaxing into it.
  • I have also been getting headaches too. I try not to take anything unless they are really bad. Two Tylenol and some caffeine has worked for me. Good luck!
  • Excedrine tension is Tylenol and caffeine. It doesn't contain aspirin so it is safe for pregnancy. Also chiropractor will help immediately.
  • Some people swear by essential oils, I think you can search on Amazon for the type people use for headaches. It's a peppermint blend. that might help??
  • A coke and Tylenol usually fixed my headache. ( Dr suggested it)
  • I drink a little caffeine and that helps. Also hot showers with a wash cloth on my neck or forehead. The main reason I wanted to chime in is because I have really low blood pressure too, 90/60. I didn't get these headaches with my first pregnancy though. During that pregnancy my blood pressure was so low they though a blood pressure cuff was broken, got a second one and said that two couldn't be broken, and then wouldn't let me stand up the rest of the day. I WAS FINE! Anyways, I have read a few times that it is the additional blood that your body is making that causes the headaches. I hope that we all start feeling better soon, I know that I am getting tired of them. Oh and naps help if you can snag one.

  • I've been having awful headaches too, never had these with my other pregnancies and I also have really low pressure (did have that the other 3 times since my non-pg bp tends to be pretty low). Anyhow I think mine are sinus related since its been crazy weather around here- it's awful and nothing helps much.

The face and scalp massage helps, pressure on my sinus spots, an ice pack on my neck and my midwives said I could try ibuprofen if I needed, I took some last night and it finally went away. I definitely wouldn't take much but it might be worth trying.

  • Have you been sleeping comfortably? I've gotten bad headaches (I'm 14 weeks) with no relief from caffeine or tylenol. I realized a lot of it was coming from my sleeping position and my upper back/shoulder tension causing bad headaches - might not be it, but just a though!
  • I've been having horrible headaches also. Sometimes so bad it hurts to move at all. I just try to stay positive and get through the day. Anxiously waiting for September!
  • Bless you all and your lovely suggestions. So sorry to hear that so many of you are dealing with these awful headaches. Mine eased up a bit today, after a nice long walk outside in the cold air (weird, I know).

Best of luck to all of you - here's hoping the headaches go away very very soon :)
  • I had a migraine so bad last weekend I ended up puking all over my bathroom..hope they don't last very long. I can feel one coming right now :( I hope you feel better!!
  • I've been having headaches and the first thing my retired-nurse mom asked me was what my BP reading was at my last appt. it was normal so I didn't press her further as to why she asked, but to your original question OP, I think there is a connection (or could be in some cases) since that was her go to question. Definitely worth asking your OB about.

I put an ice pack on my eyes today and it helped a little. I am due for a chiro appt and I will mention the headaches to my chiropractor as he can typically provide relief for that type of thing.

  • I think most of mine have stemmed from lack of caffiene. I drank coke all the time before pregnancy and just recently stopped and they got worse whenever I stopped. They are on migraine level now. Horrible. I thought I was the only one though! Glad I'm not alone!
  • I swear the day I read, "during your 2nd trimester you may experience more headaches" I started waking up with crazy all of my head headaches that can last any where from 1-6 hours. Only in the morning. Sometimes they are what wakes me up. Essential oils help and Tylenol if it lasts more than an hour or 2...
  • UGH! That's awful, @ashleylauriee. I've been susceptible to headaches my whole life but I honestly never knew they could be so severe and last so long :(
  • I'm going through the same thing, but am a week or so ahead of you. Good news -- they are getting less severe. Hopefully yours will fade too! I found getting more sleep & having a little caffeine when they come on. My drug of choice -- chai latte. Works well.
