Rhogam shot

Has anyone else had to get this? This is my first pregnancy and I just found out I'm o negative and had to get the rhogam shot in case baby's blood type is positive. I've read online about it and talked with the nurses when I got the shot but still a little confused.. Will this affect all of my pregnancies? Do I only have to get it once? Anyone else who is the same blood type please help

You will have to get the shot with all pregnancies. My blood is AB- so I got it with DS and I have to get it at my next appointment for this pregnancy. Super fun! Big needle in the bum, good times!

  • I'm O- and have to get the shot with every pregnancy (and unfortunately two miscarriages). The shot will last for a year in your system. If both you and your husband are the same blood type then you do not need to get the shot, because your baby will have your same blood type. The only side effect I have had with the shot is a sore arm.

  • The shot protects your baby from your negative blood creating antibodies. I just got my shot second shot today, I'm O-. You will get another shot after you deliver as well. Nothing to worry about.
  • If your baby is a positive blood type (they test cord blood at birth) then you will receive another rhogam shot or through your IV within 72 hrs of giving birth, it's really no biggie.
  • Thanks guys!
