August 2015 Moms

Bad results

hi ladies, this is my first time posting I read lots of other people's comments so I'm hoping to get some help or feed back.

I am 17 weeks pregnant with my first at age 25, just got my IP results from my blood work and I have 1:140 chance oh baby having Down syndrome. I'm scared and worried and really having a hard time with the news. Me and my husband will love our baby no matter what the outcome and we can only hope to be great parents but this result attaches a whole new set of challenges and worries.

Thanks for listening in advance.

Re: Bad results

  • Those tests are known for being unpredictable at best. The only way to know for sure is with an amnio. I wouldn't worry too much! :) When my mom was pregnant with me, they told her I had spina bifida and down syndrome. I have neither! The amnio ruled those things out. I hope you get some follow up work done and figure out what is going on soon! I know how stressful these things can be.

  • Miz_Liz said it exactly right. I know it has to be super scary to get this news, but focus on the positive. Your chances may be higher than average, but there is still 139 out of 140 that he or she will not have Downs. That's over a 99% chance! Try to focus on the positive. Stressing isn't good for you or your baby right now so just try to focus on positive thoughts and hopefully you will have answers soon enough.
  • Amen @Miz_Liz :)

  • Agree with @mis_liz on absolutely everything except quitting your job if you knew you were getting a million dollars. That's not very much money anymore, especially after taxes - definitely not enough to never work again!. Make it $10 million and then we're talking :)

But really, don't freak out. It's never fun to be high risk, but remember that your odds are still REALLY low. Your age also puts you in a lower risk category. I bet everything will be fine.
  • Thank you all for the positive feed back!!

Mine was1/250, (the cutoff for my age group is 1/260) did the level 2 ultrasound and the MaterniTi21 blood work test. Everything is totally fine! I will never do that test again. I know the stress and fear you're feeling, but I really wish that I wouldn't have panicked till I knew something for sure. The quad screen is just that - a screen. Nothing diagnostic at all! I know it's hard, but try to stay positive. I'm praying for you! Let us know an update.
  • You could do the amnio to confirm. Often as others said, it's nothing.
  • Remember they are just a ratio it is not saying ur lovely little one has anything ... AND remember amniocentesis can cause a miscarriage as well... All the best prayers with u and ur family
  • I started this pregnancy with a 1/100 chance and my baby doesn't have Down's. Hang in there. I am so grateful you have decided to love this baby no matter what. You are going to be great parents.

  • I  know at least 2-3 people who were told almost positively their babies would have Downs from the test and their babies were totally fine. They spent months worrying for nothing. Try to stay positive. Even if the baby does, worrying won't help at all. It will just make you feel bad. Good luck with everything!
  • This happened to my brother and sister-in-law. They actually told them straight up after looking at the ultrasound and stuff that the baby had downs.... they thankfully went somewhere else and did elective testing and the baby was 100% healthy!!! So don't get to worried.
  • NT from DD#1 had us at 1/100 for Downs, and I totally know what you're going through at the moment. Take the Materniti21 test which is as good as an amnio, to find out more . I don't know why they waste our time with these scary tests that are not definitive. Good luck!
  • Those tests Don't tell you yes or no. I hate those things. My T&P are with you. I'm sure everything is fine .<3
