No news is good news policy

OBGYN, no news is good news policy....Is it normal not to be notified of test results? I've had lots of tests and never had a call if the results were normal or not. I have to specifically ask at my next appt or call in myself. So sometimes I'm left wondering for a month. In my 1st trimester I asked the dr. and was told everything was normal, no news is good news.

In the past, with yearly check ups or regular dr. appts, I would hear back within a week good or bad, but I've never been pregnant before so not sure if this is normal practice when pregnant??

Re: No news is good news policy

  • It's frustrating.... I never got any calls and results were just told at my next appointment. They usually would say they would only call if there was an issue. Of course, you can always call the office yourself to find out the results.... I imagine this is common for larger practices

  • I call every time for my results. My doc office is busy I called yesterday for my results on my glucose to be told that I didn't pass and had to take the 3 hour one. Now I'm wondering how long it would have taken them to tell me this. They also don't post results online in any kind of timely fashion my ultrasound results took a month to post. I'm happy to look online for results but after this last test not being normal. I will always be calling for my results. My good news is when I know my stuff is normal.
  • Perfectly normal for doctors to only call if there's something wrong or they need you to do something. But if it bugs you, call.
  • This is the main reason why I get my bloodwork done at the hospital. It goes on my online health record, so I can see my results as soon as they are done. It's also nice bc my other Drs can view the results.
  • My doctor only calls of something comes back wrong. So yep, I would think no news is good news!
  • I think it's normal. I can log on to a secure website to see test results, but the nurse will call before they are even posted if there is an abnormal result.

  • The 'no news is good news' saying has been one of my life mottos. I never got calls about any of my tests and the only way I found out the results was by asking them myself. I'd like to be able to say rest assured everything is good and they will only call if they need to see/speak to you about something. But you could always call if it's weighing on your mind.
