Returning gifts?

My baby shower was on Sunday and I feel so spoiled by my friends and family's generosity. I received so many great gifts! However, now I'm faced with this dilemma. What do I keep and what do I return? Everyone has such different opinions about what the "must haves" are. For example, I received a pack and play and a rock and play. I feel like both are a little unnecessary, but I don't know which one to keep! Same with the swing and the vibrating bouncy chair. I would like to return one so I can use the money to go toward other necessities that I still need, like a stroller. I just don't know which one my baby will prefer and I don't want to regret returning the wrong item. Should I just keep it all and not worry about gifts seeming too similar/repetative? Or should I just make my best guess and go with my gut? Any advice?

Re: Returning gifts?

  • If this is your first child I would say keep it all. Like you said you don't know what will work for baby and you also don't know what you'll prefer either. I haven't had a shower yet (it's this Saturday!) but I have been buying my own stuff because I'm anxious and cannot wait. I have both a pack and play and a rock and play. I figure the pack and play is good to use in the living room and can come with me places. But its the same for the rock and play. It's easy to transport if we go somewhere for the day. Plus I could also bring it the kitchen while I cook as well as the bouncy chair. The choices are endless! Haha

I guess my point is, if you don't need to return any gifts to get something you really need, then don't.

  • Ok obviously the choice is yours and it's true, you don't know what your baby will like but if it were me, I would ditch the pack and play AND the rock and play but keep the swing and bouncy seat ((which will come in handy for lots of things like when you're needing to shower). And get yourself other things you find necessary like the stroller ect. Personally I would get the Tula baby carrier!! Omg such a life saver, but that's just me.
On the other hand there's the factor of hurting people's feelings and stuff.. I guess it depends on the relationship
  • I would def keep one or the other when it comes to the P&P and R&P. I've heard a lot of moms use them as "bassinets" when baby is still sleeping in their rooms instead of the nursery. I've heard good things about both but I decided to register for a P&P since it has multiple usable parts. Ignore this if you already have a bassinet I guess!

I don't think you need a swing and a bouncer but again, it's hard to tell what your LO will like. Some babies don't like swings.
  • I would keep both the pack n play and the rock n play. My daughter slept in the rock n play for 4 or 5 months because she had some reflux and the elevated position really helped her. If we hadn't already owned one, I would have gone out and bought one very soon after she was born. Now my daughter is 2 and we still use the pack n play a fair amount. Whenever we travel or are at a family member's or friend's house during nap time, that's where she sleeps. It's super portable and easy and pretty much a travel crib (with all the goodness of keeping the kid safe while somewhere else).

My daughter hates both the swing and bouncy seat. Kids seem to be a lot picker about those types of things. Could you return them and borrow from a friend to try the things out with your baby before you commit to buying something?
