Diaper Bags

I am debating between getting a backpack diaper bag or a regular shoulder diaper bag. If i do the backpack, the one I am looking at has an opening on the front that kind of folds down into a changing table. It would be attached to the bag. It's a Petunia Pickle Bottom Boxy Backpack. If I do a shoulder bag, I would just purchase a fold up changing pad to keep in the bag. Since I am a FTM I am not sure what the pros and cons would be to each. Anyone have any advice they can give?

I love my ppb! I have never had any other diaper bag so I can't compare or tell you pros and cons but if I were you Id choose from the clearance section or wait for their outlet sale; more affordable and well worth it!

  • LOVE my Kate Spade diaper bag! The whole bag is water proof (or I should say Breast milk proof)! An entire bottle dumped into one of the pockets and the rest of the bag stayed dry!
  • Ill be getting another PPB! My first one was amazing.

Would you consider the attached changing pad to be convenient or not?
  • Ju Ju Be BFF royal envy is what I just bought
  • I ordered a brownie gifts bag on etsy. I chose it bc it comes with a nice changing pad and storage pockets that fold into a smaller clutch (within the larger diaper bag). It also has Velcro strips to hook onto the stroller. But is super cute, durable and reasonably priced.
  • I just got a PPB boxy backpack as a gift. I just love it

I don't know about an attached changing pad. If you ever have to change baby on a Koala changing station the baby AND bag may not fit together on there. So get an additional detached one to keep in the bag for those instances if you really want the PPB.

  • I got the PPB boxy backpack and I'm really excited about it!
  • Skip hop duo, love it. Initially bought a kate spade, which I loved the look of, but the shoulder strap completely tore from the bag. Was really unimpressed.
  • I have a Amy Michelle magnolia from my first and love it! I am probably just going to order another in a different color. I also love the Vera Bradley patterns so I am going to check hers out this time too!

As far as the changing area goes, I always used a receiving blanket and big ziploc so I could easily wash it after I changed him, I never used the mats with the bags I have had.

  • The PPB boxy backpack is ALSO a shoulder bag.

And yes, it fits on a Koala care changer with the pad down.

I used mine up until my daughter was 20 months. Then my DH tore the zipper when he pulled the changing pad down really hard. Sigh. I would buy another but mine was $60 on clearance and prices seem to be ridiculous on these now.

Thanks for the good feedback! They are definitely expensive that's why I want to be sure before I splurge! Lol. I really like the idea of the backpack and have seen a few other brands that I may look into as well.
  • Eh I prefer my jujube be prepared over the boxy backpack. The pad may work when they are really little but didn't work great when I got it for my daughter

  • I also use the JuJuBe BFF.  It can be a messenger bag or backpack.  I prefer it as a messenger bag.  I bought a second one back on Black Friday that I am patiently waiting to use after this little one is born.

  • I started with a JJ Cole shoulder bag and hated it. I knew I wanted something that converted to a backpack for when I had a toddler so I ended up with a JJB BFF and a PPB Sashay Satchel. When I first got them, I reached for my BFF a lot more, but as DD got older and didn't need as much (extra outfits, bibs, cups) I use the PPB more. They are both really great bags but the BFF is bigger. I just realized I haven't used it at all since the state fair back in September, but I bet I'll be reaching for it again when baby #2 arrives- I really love all the bells and whistles, plus it's washable. Both bags can be shoulder backs or backpacks, which is nice.
The memory foam changing pad with the BFF is so nice and when she was a baby DD would even nap on it! The one that comes with the PPB is not padded and the wipes case is cheaply made. It's a lot easier for me to lose things in the bottom of the PPB while the BFF opens in such a way that you can immediately see everything in it. They're both great bags but I consider the BFF more functional while the PPB is more fashionable (but still functional enough).

  • I have the ppb boxy backpack from my son that I will reuse. It is nice to attach to the stroller with their stroller clips. Carrying it was a bit too bulky and heavy for my taste. This time I got a marc Jacobs diaper bag that is the nylon material. I will just alternate between the 2. The change pad on the ppb was fine :)

  • To this point I had 2 girls 15 months apart so The Jujube Be Prepared has been my diaper bag love (and will continue to be when its 3 under 3) because its huge, well constructed and machine washable. I do have a PPB Boxy Backpack (giving it away to my girlfriend having a baby in October) from when DD1 was an only and while I really liked it I'm an overpacker and it was never big enough for me honestly. It depends on how prepared you need to be to feel sane ;)

I had a Kate Spade for both boys. I could've just stuck with the same one (and could for this pg too, I still have both), that's how well they both lasted. Like @Miz_Liz I didn't want something that screamed diaper bag, but was still functional. I got both at sample sales and spent maybe $70 on them each? Plan on doing the same again!

The one I want can be either over the shoulder or backpack! Why choose!? :)

I ended up getting a Coach diaper bag; however I got it from the outlet, so it was already deeply discounted, and then they were having an additional 50% off sale that particular day and my aunt knew I really wanted to get one so for my shower she had given me a gift card to Coach. My reason for wanting a Coach one was because I wanted something that did not scream "diaper bag" that I could use as a tote or overnight bag after I am done with my diaper bag days. I love it, no kregrets.

This is me exactly. I love my coach bag. DD has used it as an overnight bag too because it doesn't look like a diaper bag.

    What brand

  • I have th ppb and LOVE IT!! DS is 20 months and in the 90th percentile for height and we still use the fold out changer sometimes. It actually Velcro on, so I can just tear it off to use on the changing tables. It has a bunch of great pockets that I feel are smartly placed and it wipes down easily. I love having to shoulder or backpack option. It holds plenty for me to not need a second bag for baby #2, but still fits under our small fold out stroller or under the seat on an airplane.
  • Check out Marshalls for the PPB bags. They have this seasons colors already! I just picked mine up!

@jorstad1 it is a Ju Ju Be BFF diaper bag :)

I actually bought a Coach diaper bag a couple years ago to use as a carry-on purse for when I fly. I still love it, and am excited to finally use it for it's advertised purpose this summer. I'll probably get a backpack style bag also though so DH doesn't have to walk around with a giant purse when I'm tired of carrying it :)

This may sound silly but I've had a sling diaper bag backpack for years! I got it to use when I rode my motorcycle, I do miss riding now that I'm pregnant :( It was awesome because it had an insulated bottle pocket on the side so it kept my drinks cold! It's rather slim so I'm thinking it will come in handy when going out for short periods or for Dad!
  • The mat and nat raylan diaper bag is what I purchased!! I'm in love with it!
