NT Scan Gender reveal....

Has anyone gone for their NT scan and discovered the sex of their baby? I have mine on Wednesday and have heard that you can often see the sex of the baby at 12/13 weeks, especially if it's a boy. Just wondering if anyone has had any success with this!!

I have my NT scan today, I will be sure to let you know! Although I don't believe that to be the case. I am having a blood test similar to the "Harmony" test which looks for Down Syndrome as well as other conditions. Plus as a bonus it will also tell you the gender of the baby as well : ) Results should be in approximately 7-10 days!!

  • That wasn't the case with dd when we had the nt scan 2 years a go. I don't think the tech really even looked for gender or if he did he didn't say anything about it. Ours is also today so I'll let you know.
  • I've heard techs guess at that scan and are wrong so many times. It's very early still. They didn't even mention gender at my last one. Tomorrow is my scan for this pregnancy.

My last pregnancy, the tech told me I was having a boy, which was correct. He said it was very obvious from my sonogram. My sister in law was also told a boy at her NT scan and it was correct as well. So I guess it depends on a lot on the positioning of your baby.
  • I was trying to find the website I remember from the last time I was pregnant.  It showed how similar the sex organs look at 12 weeks.  If the ultrasound tech does make a guess be sure you don't trust it any further than a guess.  Don't go painting the room based on it or anything

  • Thanks ladies! Looking forward to hearing how everyone's scan goes!
  • No. And most techs won't even wager a guess at that point or bother looking too hard. Until around 11 weeks or so, boys and girls look pretty much exactly the same, and even at 12/13 weeks, it's incredibly difficult to tell with any kind of accuracy. If they make a guess, I certainly wouldn't go buying anything.

For the record, with my son, I had an unplanned US at 12 weeks and was told girl. By the AS at 20w, he was very definitively a boy.

Also, the AS will tell you the sex, not the gender. Genetic tests can also tell you sex, but it's a bonus and not the reason to have them. Ultrasound boutiques can also tell you, but typically not until 15/16w at the earliest, and they don't guarantee it. Your best bet, if you want to know the sex and start preparing, is just to wait for the AS.
  • Had mine today and she said based on what she could see she would say girl. She also said she wouldn't say anything if she wasn't pretty sure (baby was spread eagle basically the whole scan) but to wait for the AS to know for sure. Like I said earlier a different tech at the same office with dd didn't mention anything. I'm not putting everything on baby being a girl but it will be fun to see in 8 more weeks if she was right! And it was fun to hear what she thought too. Made it a little more real for me I think.
  • We did the Harmony test on 3/13 and got the results back today. Everything came back fine and they told me I'm having a girl. They didn't do a scan, Harmony is all through the blood. My doctor didn't offer the NT scan so I guess it depends on the doctor.
  • We were told we were having a boy at my 13 week scan with my youngest (now almost 6). The sonographer even said she would stake her house on it. She was very experienced, so I guess that has something to do with it :)

    Good luck :)
  • Do they automatically do the blood work that tells you the sex of the baby along with the NT scan or is this something that you have to request and pay for out of pocket? Just wondering because I am having my NT scan on April 7th, and I am just curious if I will be able to find out the sex of the baby shortly after
  • The blood test is different and your insurance may not pay for it.
  • We don't want to know the gender, but at our NT scan my boyfriend was joking around and said to the tech, "Oh it must be a boy! I see his little thing!" (LOL, it was an arm) The tech was not amused. She was like, "that's the last thing I'm looking for right now."
  • I have my NT scan on Rp

The bloodwork offered by my OB's office is done on correlation with the NT scan, and it was offered to me--I did not request it. However my test did not include finding out the baby's sex.

  • @VioletandRose wow, rude! I'm lucky bc I used to work at the OB/GYN where I'm receiving my OB care, but NONE of our techs would've replied like that. I'm sorry :-/ Mine was the U/s manager who is very experienced and has only been wrong once with determining sex at the NT scan. She said she was pretty positive it's a boy! Other than a very boyish (tie detail, haha) onesie which I purchased a few weeks before my NT, I'll still hold off on gender-specific till my comprehensive ultrasound. :-\"

  • Had my NT scan last Friday and the tech thought 80% chance it's a boy. Got the blood draw for NIPT, though, and should have the results in the next couple days that not only say the baby is low risk for chromosomal issues, but also what the gender is!

  • I haven't had mine for this pregnancy yet, but during my last pregnancy the ultrasound tech predicted girl and she was right! The tech did tell me she couldn't be sure until my 20 week ultrasound.
