Concerning 3D ultrasound

So, let me preface this by saying that we will love our son and find him to be "perfect" no matter what he looks like.  BUT....his 29 week 3D ultrasound left us feeling a little worried about him.  Our LO looks like he has huge lips and nose, and missing some fingers! Anyone else experience a not so flattering 3D ultrasound?? He was super close to my uterine wall, which may have caused some issues with getting a clear image.  I'm just in a chronic state of worry and stress about EVERYTHING to do with him.  Just want him to be healthy, mind, body and soul!

Re: Concerning 3D ultrasound

  • The only thing that I'd be concerned about is his fingers, especially since 3D US do not seem very flattering to me and most make babies look kind of creepy IMO. What were the results of your anatomy scan around 20 weeks? If he had all his fingers then, then I doubt there is any cause for concern...

  • Did you ask the tech?
  • They actually never talked about his fingers or toes in anatomy scan. Probably something I should've confirmed. I have a drs appt this week, so I'm hoping they can take a look at ultrasounds again.
  • Was it done at a doctor's office or just a place to get 3D pics? I do ultrasound for a living and if there appeared to be missing digits, that should have been brought to a radiologist's attention right away if it was done in an office. If it was at a "for fun" place, I would just bring the images to your doctor and have them take a quick peek.. I wouldn't rely on images not done by a doctor's office
  • Yes, the 3D scan was done at my drs office during my 29 week ultrasound. Now I'm worried that my drs office isn't being very attentive!!!
  • Just ask them about it. It could be just that you saw an image that didnt show all the fingers but the sonographer did see them all throughout the scan.
  • My ultrasound looked awesome and clear but the tech said it's because I have a good amount of amniotic fluid and not much body fat .. It all depends on your body and the tech it's not a photograph so it's not showing you what your child looks like

I get a little 3D sneak peak at my baby every single week when I go for the biophysical profile ultrasounds I have to do. Let me ease your mind by saying my LO looks different every week on these things. I've got some where you can see her perfect little tiny nose and others where it looks smooshed and rather large. Her foot was in front of her face in the one last week, and it looks like only half a foot. However I've seen how perfect her feet are on scans in the past so I know it was just how that particular ultrasound came out. If you've had an anatomy scan and nothing unusual or concerning has been noted by your doctor or tech, try not to stress. The 3D ultrasounds come out weird. It's just fact lol
  • Oh yeah that's another thing.. The nose can look big and smooshy if the baby's face is against your stomach
  • No worries. My little guy has the big smooshed nose too. If you are getting that in depth of an us, they have deft checked for fingers. He is good.

  • Mine looked like the baby had the most recessed chin in the universe. They're still growing in all kinds of ways at that point; however, you should ask the tech and doctor if there is anything unusual.
