November 2015 Moms

when are you finding out the gender (assuming you are)

Our physician told me from the blood work she's taking on April 9th, we can find out our baby's gender.

I'm intrigued, but wonder if finding out later during an ultrasound would be more special...what are you ladies doing?

Re: when are you finding out the gender (assuming you are)

  • As soon as possible. I'm going to have to ask about the blood test, it wasn't an option with my older two.
  • Loading the player...
  • On April 9 how far along will you be?? I would be interested in that
  • We are waiting until the birth. I want to be suprised.
  • And they can usually do the cell free DNA at 10 weeks
  • I'm hopefully doing the harmony blood test and finding the gender out when I do that. If I do decide to do the test.
  • I had no idea that you could find out the gender now from a blood test. I was never given the option, unless this is a fairly new thing? If it were me, I would want to wait until the 20 week anatomy scan, but knowing how impatient I am I would probably ask to find out.

  • @kateliznelsen let us know what the doctor says. From what I read the blood work is not performed at my office unless you are over 35 or have chromosomal issues in your family. Insurance doesn't cover it to just do it for gender. My co workers are paying 800$ to do it privately and I can't jump on that wagon. Let me what your doctor says
  • $800? Not worth it, especially when you are already getting an ultrasound anyway. I'll still ask, but there's nothing that justifies that kind of unnecessary expense. @bishopgn I'm not heading to the Dr for a few weeks, but I will let you know what I find out.
  • We did a 3d sono at 16 weeks last time. Our family got to with us because the room was huge and accommodated a lot of people.

  • We have actually decided that we don't want to know - I know it's not common anymore but both my husband and I feel that this is one of the only true surprises in life and think it will be that much better to find out at the birth.
  • We plan to find out around 20 weeks
    Married: 6.28.14
    TTC #1: 2.1.15

  • We'll wait until the anatomy scan.
    Anniversary

  • Thanks for the feedback everyone! Our physician does blood work at 10 weeks anyway, so we're just going to find out then. It isn't at an additional cost.

We're really excited, and I think it will be special still.
  • We found out with my first at an ultrasound at 15 weeks, second with 3d ultrasound at 14 weeks. This time we'll probably just wait until the 18-20 week unless MIL wants to pay for the 3d since she's going nuts for a girl (and she'd probably ask for her money back if it's a third boy. Half kidding).

  • At 15 weeks I'm so excited ! Storkvision (Atlanta) does them for $45 that includes pics and a DVD. I did it w/ my son back in 2011. Couldn't wait for the 20 wk gender ultrasound w/ my doctor.
  • We will find out when I deliver, just like #1

  • My doctor said I have to wait until 20 weeks. I was also told the blood test is only for those 35 and over and that it isn't covered under insurance.
  • Anatomy scan, so 20ish weeks
  • Team green here...waiting until birth!

  • I was told I could find out through the MaternaT21 blood test. I'm old so they suggest I do it. Find out the gender at 9 weeks! That's crazy! I'm impatient so I'll probably ask the gender.
  • Anatomy scan.
The blood test is only offered here if you're over 35 and wouldn't be covered by my insurance until then either.

I know people will do what they want- but earlier this year the FDA put out a warning about those optional ultrasound places. They are finally studying the effects of multiple exposures to ultrasounds and say moms should stay away unless medically necessary.
I unfortunate needed quite a few ultrasounds in the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy last time due to concerns... It was great to see the baby but the risks always worried me a little.
  • Sex not gender. We will hopefully find out at 20ish week ultrasound, same as with our first child. I wouldn't pay money to find out earlier but only cuz money is tight. I'm antsy and would love to know asap!
  • Blood work 4/15/15 should know by 4/22/15. Excited!!!
  • Already know. We did IVF with PGD. (Genetic testing) due to previous losses and so we knew that our embryo was/is a girl when we transferred (only had one embryo frozen from a past cycle). Crazy to already know as soon as I had a positive test that our baby is a girl especially since we already have two boys.

  • Just FYI, those 10week blood tests can be wrong: one of DH's coworkers had it done, it said girl! She bought a lot of (very expensive!) pink things. At the 20wk ultrasound: surprise! They had to buy all new stuff!! (I think if it were free, I might do the blood work anyway, but because it would cost a lot extra for me, we'll wait for the ultrasound)

Really? I had no idea they could be wrong. Good to know.
