From nursing to bottle - STM recommendations?

Hi ladies,
I took a class on breastfeeding yesterday, and it was recommended that when using bottles to go with a wide nipple and slow flow. The woman teaching the class said she didn't recommend Dr. Brown's brand because they didn't make a wide - mouth nipple...which of course is the only brand i registered for! What bottle brands have you used and liked? I plan on nursing and using the bottles for breast milk instead of formula for as long as I can, and mostly just for when I return to work. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

  • With both of my kids I used playtex nursers and only ever used the slow flow nipple. It worked great.

Pretty sure I've seen dr Browns wide neck? At the end of the day- each kid is different. We've used dr Browns for both of our kids and are crossing our fingers that baby 3 likes them too!

My son went back n forth from breast to bottle just fine, but daughter had latching problems and just preferred bottle.

At end of day- don't open all boxes of bottles until you know your kid likes them. Register for whatever you like :)

  • I used the platex ones as well. At first we just used Medela ones while I was still breastfeeding. Both worked fine- but DS was generally just a good eater. I've heard of kids just not taking to certain ones.

I did buy the kiinde set this time around. So we'll see.
  • Our LC recommended Dr Brown's and DD did great going from bottle to breast, however, she's a great eater in general. She was born with a severe tongue tie that made nursing nearly impossible the first week so I pumped and bottle fed. Once it was clipped she transitioned back to breast with no problem. I really think it depends on the LO.
  • We used the Medela ones since they came with our pump and LO liked them. I don't think the width of the base really matters - just make sure you get the slow flow nipples
  • Dr browns does have a wide version. But, my daughter did fine with the normal dr browns nipples and nursing.
  • I used the avent wide one and they worked amazing!
  • I used avent with my son. It was the only kind I tried and he did fine with them. This time I'm trying the Joovy Boob, they're glass with a silicone sleeve. Mostly because I think they're really cute. ;)

  • I registered for tommee tippee.. Im nervous now. Do types of bottles really make that much of a difference?? I know the flow on the nipple matters so i registered accordingly.. But is the transition to bottle really that hard??
  • Every baby is different.  Mine transitioned to bottle so easily.  We used Tommee Tippee.  One of my nephews wouldn't take any bottle my SIL tried until she borrowed one of my Tommee Tippees to try and he finally took that one.  My other nephew wouldn't take ANY bottle and finally just went from boob to sippee cup.  I would recommend not buying a crap load of one type of bottle until you know what your baby is going to take.  They can be expensive!!
  • I highly recommend the Tommee Tippee.

DD transitioned seamlessly between the two. Also, they have very few parts so makes cleaning them easy.

buy a single bottle of a few different brands and only open and sanitize one at a time. If the first one doesn't work, try the next. If it does- stick with it! Return the others!
  • It took a few months for dd to take a bottle but she did eventually and I had tommee tippee.

  • Tommee tippee.
  • My lo only  took NUK and by 9 MO  she only wanted the trainer cup (still has a soft nipple). I second what other have said, don't buy a ton of bottles or open them all up. Wait to see what baby wants then stock up.

  • I used playtex drop ins with my son and attempted a bottle with my daughter but I waited til sge was older, after having latch issues and finally about 10-12 weeks in with my son I quite nursing. I waited to attempt a bottle with my daughter until at least 3 months and sge refused them. It was fine because it was only for a date night. But this time around I'm hoping to get this baby to nurse well but take a bottle on occasion if I need to. I'm in a wedding in aug and it will be harder to go nurse all the time.
  • I breastfed using a nipple shield and the tommee tippee newborn bottles were very similar to the medela nipple shield so going back and forth between the two was easy. That was the only bottle nipple my son would take.
  • I've searched the boards, and couldn't find anything on this, and it might be a silly question, but I'm going to tack it on here too.  Are the collars on different types of bottles the same size?  So, if the lo hates one 'type' do you actually have to buy more bottles, or just different nipples?
  • Can you use tommee tippee and Dr Browns wide neck bottles or is it better to sick with just one brand?
  • We always had good luck with Born Free.
