Ugh!! In between regular clothes and maternity clothes nightmare!

Hi ladies, I'm 14w and on a business trip this week...I'm in my hotel room planning out my outfits for the week. I guess I should have tried on a few more things before packing because I'm now trying stuff on and nothing fits right! I'm definitely in that feeling fat, in between regular clothes and maternity clothes stage! I've been using my Bella Bands for the past few weeks, but I'm starting to outgrow a lot of my outfits. Just feeling frustrated because I don't feel ready/big enough to buy maternity clothes yet, but none of my old clothes are really fitting either. Ugh! Just needed to vent to someone who would understand!! What have you guys been doing in this "in between" stage? I really want to avoid spending too much money on maternity clothes, but I guess I am going to have to break down and go shopping sooner than I thought.

Re: Ugh!! In between regular clothes and maternity clothes nightmare!

  • I don't have any advice, but I just wanted to say you are not alone! Last week, it look me over an hour to get dressed for work! I went through about everything in my closet! I have not told anyone at work yet but I am thinking that I may need to since nothing fits and I may need to break out the maternity clothes!

  • I feel your pain! I'm in the same place especially with work clothes. Mostly I wear dresses so that makes it a bit easier. But I also just got the Minnie maternity pants from J Cree and I think they are perfect for this stage. They're not like your typical maternity pant with a huge belly but rather they just have a little extra paneling and stretch. I think they're worth the investment because they will work throughout pregnancy as well as after.

  • I have been wearing leggings, long tops, dresses, and I have one more pair of jeans that fit normally, otherwise I wear them with a rubber band and a long top. But I love leggings and dresses because it feels so nice to be in comfy clothes all day instead of being a sausage in jeans! lol
  • I feel your pain.

My biggest win this time around was buying some stretchy skinny jeans from American Eagle one size up. I have to do the rubber band thing around the button. I also shopped over Christmas for looser, flattering tops that I can wear preggers or not.

Do you have any friends who were pregnant? Maybe they still have clothes you can borrow or have.

  • Bella bands, dresses, and one fantastic pair of black yoga pants that I can dress up with a blazer and a pair of heels. :-)
  • I've been wearing dresses the last two weeks!! When I wear my pants they roll over or are just too tight! But I don't even have a bump yet lol
  • We went to a cute resale shop and bought four maternity bottoms- I wear a lot of flowy tops anyway and lots of dresses so it's been fine. I'm nervous about swimwear! Our neighborhood pool is a major factor in our summers and I want to look cute and not get too many weird comments from the neighbors! They always talk!
  • I feel ya, last fri I had an interview and put on my black slacks and they BARELY zipped halfway...my bella band saved me but I was sausaged into those pants! Hahahha. I love clothes but didn't want to go nuts on maternity....however I've had to shell out a few hundred over the last week buying some basics because let's face it our bodies are not getting any smaller each week -_- and im sure that won't be the last of my purchases haha
  • I hate the feeling of walking out of the house and thinking that strangers will think I have a beer belly if I'm wearing something fitted. Ha so I've been sticking to loose clothing. But last week my mom bought some cheap tops and dress at old navy for me that are practical for this stage and later on. Some of it is just plain but they have some cute tops and cute maternity shorts for a fair price.
  • I'm 16w 4d and i just broke down and bought some maternity stuff over the weekend. I have been so hesitant to do it but it actually made me really happy! I went to Motherhood and got a few pencil skirts for work, a pair of red skinny jeans, 7 pairs of underwear and some jessica simpson jean shorts. It's all actually really cute. Then i went with my mom to a few thrift stores and got a TON of sun dresses and maternity tops :) I even found a maxi dress from A Pea in the Pod for $2 ;) Just give up on those old clothes and do it, you'll feel so much better!

  • I'm in the same boat. I'm dreading getting ready for work right now. Nothing fits and I feel so uncomfortable every day. Like a lot of ppl who commented, I'm just trying to stick with loose, flowy tops. I made a few maternity purchases, but they're way too big for me right now. My friend gave me a couple pairs of pants that are sized up, which has been helpful, but still isn't helping with the self-confidence! I just keep telling myself that it'll only be a few more weeks.
  • Leggings are my go to. . I'm 16 wk 2 days and luckily still fit in my regular stuff but started to pick up some maternity stuff over the weekend bc i know the day is coming when i wake up with a belly. I was shocked at how cute the stuff at motherhood maternity was and prices not bad if you shop deals. Got super cute skinny colored jeans on the clearance and good prices on some tops!
  • Lululemon high rise and/or roll down pants - the biggest life savers!
  • I am 16w and have been using a hair binder for the last 4 weeks to tie my pants together. But over this past weekend I realized that even with the binder I can't sit down in my jeans without it pushing on my stomach to much. So I have been leaving them unbuttoned when I sit. I think I will be doing this for a couple of more weeks before I finally by maternity pants. My long shirts cover it up so you would have no idea. Plus I wear yoga pants at home so it's really just when I'm out and about. But getting to this stage is both good and bad. I cants wait to have a she's pregnant belly vs is she fat belly.

I hate maternity clothes... I can't find anything I like. I've resorted to buying a few solid 'maternity' tank tops and solid T's I can layer under cardigans for now. Maybe once I have a bigger bump my opinion will change. Right now I just feel fat with huge boobs. But, I can't wait to get back into my normal clothes next fall.

I finally caved and went to Macy's and bought a pair of maternity jeans and tee's to cover the stretchy top. I'm almost out of my bigger sized jeans and so many of my shirts are getting too short to cover my belly. What sucked was when the cashier said that the coupons don't work on maternity clothes :(

  • I've only bought maternity jeans and dress pants, then bought normal shirts at Dress Barn one size up in stretchy material so they'll grow with me and I'll be able to wear them until my belly is big enough for actual maternity tops. Right now maternity tops just look silly!
  • I completely feel your pain! I actually wore my maternity pants last week (they were too big but so comfortable! ). Everything else is getting to be too tight. It's so frustrating because with my son I didn't even start to really show until 20+ weeks. Now I'm 13 weeks and feel like i look 20. Even sweatpants are uncomfortable sometimes cause I can't stand anything constricting my belly.
  • My issue is scrubs I am too small for maternity ones but my normal ones I am busting out of the few I can pull on :/ I don't want to spend a lot just to go up a size for a couple of weeks
  • You are not alone! I wear scrubs to work, which is gonna be a problem soon cuz im currently folding my pants under my belly and my scrub tops are becoming too short. But I don't wanna buy bigger scrubs that im only gonna wear for 4 months! & don't get me started on regular clothes. After half of my closet is on the bed, I've been ending up in leggings and a Tshirt With a cami underneath. Trying to avoid spending money on maternity clothes so that I can Have money to enjoy a five month Long maternity leave! Waiting on warmer weather so the summer dresses and maxis can come out!!
  • Luckily, this is baby #2 so I have some maternity stuff I dragged out. I have jeans and work pants that just have a thin elastic band so you can wear them anytime - soo much more comfortable than my regular clothes! Most of my tops are too big, but I did find some maternity tees at Target that the bump area runs small, so they work for now. The brightly colored ones with black slacks look nice enough to wear to work (I'm a teacher).

  • Zigzagstripe.com has some really cute palazzo pants I've been wearing for work. They're not maternity, but they're stretchy enough to be able to wear for many months......maybe even the whole pregnancy.
  • Me too!!! It's driving me crazy. I'm too small in the waist for maternity pants. They have too much room in the hips but I can't fit in my pants. I'm just wearing the dresses I can. A lot of my dresses don't handle the 3 size bigger boobs. I'm enjoying being small cause I know it will go away soon doesn't make it any less frustrating haha (My 2nd and I get big hence why my maternity clothes from last time don't fit haha ).
  • I totally feel you girl! I've been wearing dresses, leggings and cute sweaters for work. None of my pants fits comfortably. I still buy non maternity outfits (mostly dresses) that could work for my growing belly. It's not easy but try to find a stretchable or flowy material. I honestly don't want to spend too much money on maternity clothes unless I really have to.
  • Getting ready for work has been my demise every morning! Im not late because I'm exhausted anymore, now I am late because I have no shirts that work for me.  I think I have an issue though, I have shirts that are baggy and loose--problem is I have never really worn these pre-pregnancy and wearing them now I feel like it just makes me look bigger not pregnant. Does anyone have suggestions or secrets to buying maternity clothes? I am 16 weeks 4 days now and since we are all due in Sept we will be pretty big come summer time. How do you buy now those things on sale taking into consideration a size you'll be in the summer? What Size do you get? (as you may be able to tell I am a FTM and am a little clueless on maternity clothes--or a little stubborn and don't want to go buy any, but I think my time has come :( )
  • @ABombard12 you usually buy maternity clothes in the size you are prebaby. Like if you wear a small prebaby you buy a small maternity. You may have to buy one size bigger in shirts or shorts later on depending on where you carry your weight. For the most part just get the size you were prebaby.
  • @thefuturemrsdaniel Thank you! See I think this has been my problem. I have been borrowing clothes that are a size bigger than me (pants--fantastic) shirts... just make me look like I drank a keg of beer and I'm trying to hide it :(   I think I am going to go to Destination Maternity tonight and see if they can help recommend a go to pair of work pants and hopefully there will be some tops on clearance!

  • @ABombard12 how many weeks are you? Yeah target is a good one and old Navy(they have good basics). If you need shirts to hide the keg belly I like just buying regular loose shirts. The maternity shirts still just made me look fat haha
  • I ran into the same problem this week! I'm 16 weeks and on a business trip this week. Although I didn't think I was big enough for maternity clothes, I caved. I can't tell you how much ore comfortable I feel in maternity pants and tops! Only in mediums from motherhood but such a difference from my pants with the belly band and oversized shirts!
  • Maxi skirts and dresses! I feel like I don't have to suck anything in that way and I don't look sloppy in the oversized maternity lol :)

I feel your pain! I just caved and bought maternity jeans because my used-to-be-too-big scrubs were constricting, and a tech said "scrubs getting a little tight?" And I even had to let go of my vanity and even buy a size up in the top. The maternity scrubs...while still too big and sag in the belly a bit....made me SO much more comfortable that I didn't even care any more! I feel like they'll be a good investment for the next few months so I'm not self-conscious and I'm a FTM that will be using them again so I figure it was money well spent!

  • @futuremrsdaniel I am 16 weeks and 4 days. How many weeks are you?   I finally went to destination maternity last night and I have to say... I broke down and bought one pair work pants--AMAZING. I don't have a huge bump yet but it is noticeable... the line between baggy shirts to hide it and not looking just fat is hard. I tried on some maternity shirts and it made it look worse also. Old Navy I just got some tank tops to throw on later down the road this summer (my usual getting home attire when we eat dinner on the deck)
  • I'm 15 weeks, not showing yet, but my pants do pinch my lower belly when I'm sitting and it is so uncomfortable! I just ran to Ross to see what they have and reluctantly tried on some maternity pants. They fit perfectly and are sooo insanely comfy, no pinching! They were $12.99 haha. Of course they won't last forever but I just needed a quick fix in this in-between phase for the next few weeks. Good luck!
  • Ugh me!!!  Luckily I'm a stay at home mom, so some baggy jeans and a tshirt is my outfit these days.
