Asking for another ultrasound.

I'm almost 36 weeks, my last ultrasound was about 29 weeks. I don't think my doctor plans on giving me another one but has anybody asked for one before and got it? I really want to know an estimated size. Size was always a problem with my first two so I guess it would just ease my mind to know he's a good size.

Re: Asking for another ultrasound.

  • Most people only get one or two ultrasounds a pregnancy unless you're high risk. Unless it's medically necessary your insurance will not pay for it.

  • I asked for one and got it around week 35, but I have GD.
  • My advice, move to Canada.
  • You'll have to pay out of pocket for it if it isn't medically necessary.

  • I asked my doctor for one just for peace of mind to make sure everything is still developing correctly since I haven't had an ultrasound since 21 weeks but she said it's not medically necessary. She did suggest though getting a 3d ultrasound done. We have to pay out of pocket for it but we'll get a DVD of the ultrasound that we will be showing at the baby shower. None of our guests know so it'll be a special surprise for those who come to the shower.
  • I had one at my 37 week appt. it wasn't medically necessary and my insurance did cover it. I would call your insurance company to see if you're eligible for another one and if you are then ask your doctor. It never hurts to ask. However, if you want it just for Baby's size then you should be aware that it's only a guess and very rarely accurate.
  • My advice, move to Canada.

Even in Canada you typically have between one and three ultrasounds: one to date pregnancy (I had this at 7 weeks, but I know other people who didn't have this done for various reasons), a twelve week one accompanied by a blood test, and the anatomy scan. I had an additional one early when I went to the ER for bleeding but unless you're high risk or they suspect something is off most people don't have any after the anatomy scan.

  • Talk to your doctor about your size concerns and see what they say. I've had 3 and still have 3 more coming because of my gestational diabetes and they want to make sure size won't be an issue for labour. Again canadian here so I don't know what costs are involved with doctors in the states but a convo with your Dr can't hurt. If they aren't concerned you prob shouldn't be either
  • I'm in Canada and at all my prenatal appointments there is always a bedside ultrasound machine in the room just for quick checks or if your concerned they can do a quick scan for you nothing In depth but enough to ease your mind

This is not standard though. I'm in Canada, baby #3, high risk and 2 different cities, and none of my high risk OBs have had ultrasound machines right in the exam room. My OB right now has a machine in her office but will not do an ultrasound unless she feels that it is medically necessary. I'm high risk for placental abruption and preterm labour and haven't had an ultrasound since 30 weeks because it hasn't been 'medically necessary'. So just being in Canada doesn't mean that we get more ultrasounds whenever we ask.
  • I had one at 36w only because the baby had not been super active that morning. They made me do an nst and little lady did not participate so well so they sent me for u/s. I'm also high risk.

If you don't need one, then be happy!
  • Insurance would cover it if you went into the ER they do an ultrasound no matter what to check on the baby i went for cramping but everything was fine i just got way to paranoid

I guess standard depends where you live then. I'm in Canada and can get an ultrasound at any time I ask and it's covered. I don't have any issues in this pregnancy and I've asked for them and it's never been a problem.
