Any Moms Here Had Breast Surgery?

As a FTM I am naturally concerned with my ability to breastfeed.. Even though my implants are submuscular and did not require messing about with the actual breast tisse.. Ive had 2 augmentations so far.

I have heard breast reduction is more of an issue. Any thoughts? Experiences?

Thanks ;)

Re: Any Moms Here Had Breast Surgery?

  • I called my surgeon to discuss to see if he had any tips or pointers. He actually put me in touch with a woman who'd gone through the pregnancy/breastfeeding process with implants. (His office actually has a program where you can elect to be available for post-op questions. It's pretty awesome)

After my surgeon AND doctor assured me that the breastfeeding process is totally fine and there is very little risk, I shot an email over to the other patient for some added info. She's gone through the process twice - once without implants and then again with. She said both experiences were very similar.

The only issue that did come up a bit when speaking with my surgeon, was the method of which the implant was put into the body. Submuscular is obviously ideal, as is implantation by means other than the nipple. A lot of mammary ducts hide out around the nipple, so it's possible an incision could compromise these. But, if you still have full sensation in your nipples you should be good to go!

You can always call your surgeon for a consult about these things. I'm sure they get these kinds of questions on a regular basis.

Also expect for your boobs to be, like, superhero huge :D

  • Thank you for the info! FTM & I also have implants so it's nice to hear other stories.
  • I asked this prior to my surgery because it was a concern of mine. I went submuscular with hopes that I won't have any problems BF. Only problem is I didn't expect my boobs to get as HUGE as they are during pregnancy. I'm up like over a cup size already and VS doesn't go larger than DD so I need suggestions on where to look for bras if you ladies have any!
  • Ugh it sucks because I don't want to shell out money for really expensive bras from VS (or anywhere really when I'll only be wearing them a few months) but yeahhh I miss wearing my pretty bras!

I posted this same answer in another post earlier today, but - Nordstrom Rack!  I live and die by their bra selection; especially the clearance finds. They have always had specialty sizes and I've found they're still accommodating as the ladies continue to outdo themselves throughout this pregnancy :)

I have implants, too, and have been a little worried about this. I did my research beforehand and I know that the chance of not being able to breastfeed is very low, but I know it does happen. I originally had the implants put in through my armpit, but had to have a revision on one of them and he had to go back in through the nipple. My nipple scar had healed up very nicely after the surgery and was barely visible, but is now becoming more prominent--I'm assuming because my boobs are getting bigger and stretching out. Anyone else have this issue?

My biggest concern is that I will be able to breastfeed out of one and not the other due to the one nipple potentially being damaged...that seems like that would be a complicated problem. :/ However, I do have feeling in both, so hopefully that is a good sign. I guess I'll just have to wait and find out when the time comes!
  • @tinyfeets I'm gonna have to head to the mall and comb the clearance rack today! Also, I love your username haha :D
  • @rachel4733 One of my scars slowly crept back, too! The initially healed with zero visibility but with all those lovely hormones and things a-changing, the scars can darken a little bit. My doctor was happy to reassure me that they'll probably go back to being nearly invisible after birth.

One piece of really good advice I got was to speak with a lactation specialist before birth and also on the day the baby arrives. They'll be able to help you prep and also keep you prepared for what to look out for in case the surgery DID cause a hiccup.

@bonniecouture Good luck on the hunt! I swear I find so many cute steals in that clearance section. And we'll see how tiny they are around month 8 ;)
