Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Life after D&C

My husband and I found out we were expecting in December.  In January, an U/S showed it was a blighted ovum.  We waited 2 weeks for a second U/S and the blighted ovum was confirmed.  We waited for the miscarriage to pass naturally, but it didn't.  The Dr prescribed medication to complete the miscarriage.  That was also unsuccessful.  I had a D&C at the end of January.  The follow up appointment with the Dr in mid February showed everything was normal and the bleeding stopped a day or two after.  The Dr told me I should expect my next period within 6-8 weeks.

Almost 6 weeks after the D&C, my lady business hit with full force!  It was literally like a monsoon. It was all the sudden and I passed many clots.  After that, the bleeding slowed to very light.  It was a light flow the whole rest of the day until that evening.  This was MUCH worse.  I  was sweating, light headed, the flow was unbelievable; golf ball sized clots and the flow was enough to push out the tampon.  I went to urgent care and the Dr said I was fine.  They did blood work and it was all normal.

I thought the worst had passed.  I was wrong...

All day the flow was light and there was no cramping.  Then tonight all the sudden I soaked through a pad in less than a minute.  I went to the bathroom, passed a lot of blood and several clots.  I still had no cramps.  It almost felt like I needed to poop.  That lasted for about 30 minutes.

I'm a little worried, I don't know if this is normal.  I know your first period will be weird, but this seems extra weird.  Did anyone have a similar experience?  I'm sick of washing the bathmat and my clothes.

Re: Life after D&C

  • Wow! First off, I'm sorry for your loss. I was told not to use tampons though for a few months after my mc incase of infection. But I don't think that has anything to do with the amount of blood. I'm actually a nurse and I would advise you to call your OB. That seems like a lot of blood loss and its worrisome. Having those many symptoms associated with the excess blood loss can be dangerous.

  • Yes..I've had my Dd and the triplets through ivf and then randomly got pregnant? ! I didn't find out until THE ER tho, when I went at midnight 2 nights ago due to being and huge clots that wouldn't allow me to get off the toilet. I ended up losing 3 liters (60%) , convulsing, & needing 6 units of blood before I was stable enough for a D&C. Apparently I was 7 weeks!

  • The urgent care nurse was in contact with my OB's office.  Urgent care basically said, you're fine go home and the OB agreed.  The Ob's nurse called the next day and followed up.  That was the one day I didn't have a huge blood loss.

    So, here's the conclusion...

After I wrote the first post, I stayed up a little longer and everything was fine.  I went to sleep.  Probably an hour after I fell asleep I woke up feeling like I was going to pass a lot of clots again.  I made it to the toilet and was able to call to my husband before I passed out.  I was in and out of consciousness.  I ended up vomiting all over myself, partially conscious and partially unconscious.  Then I got to meet a bunch of very nice EMTs and ride in an ambulance.

At the ER, they gave me fluids and stabilized me.  Again, they contacted my OB's office and I will be seeing them early next week.  They also gave me BC that I am taking 2-3 a day to flood my body with estrogen.  The goal being to clamp down my cervix and stop the bleeding.

I know my experience is not the norm, and I really hope next time involves less ambulances and ERs.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
That doesn't seem normal after a D&C. Isn't it supposed to get rid of everything?
That sounds like my miscarriage.. I passed out due to blood loss as well.
I would find a new doctor... My period after my miscarriage was just like any other period prior to my mc.

    I'm glad you're okay....
  • I really hope this is the last update....

First thank you for all the support, this whole situation has not made this any easier, but hopefully it's all past us now.

I ended up back in the ER after that 2nd update.  At least my husband was able to drive me there, no ambulance.  I was there for a couple hours before they decided to admit me.  A U/S revealed an anomaly at the top of my uterus.  The U/S wasn't detailed enough to tell exactly what it was.

The next day, I had an contrast MRI.  It turns out that the D&C was successful and there was no retained product, but my blood vessels had a malformation that is very rare.  I was born this way and it may never have been revealed without the D&C.  Many of the the doctors I was treated by had never seen it in their entire career.  They suspect the D&C irritated the vessels and caused them to not be able to clot.  I ended up having to spend 2 nights in the hospital, but after a relatively simple fast procedure they were able to fix it.  They basically blocked the malformed vessels.

The procedure is more than likely permanent, it may need to be repeated in 6-12 months in case nature finds away around.  Most importantly there is no impact on my fertility.  It will just be something that will require I have a little more attention during the gestation.  The biggest risk is the placenta attaching near the area with the blocked vessel scar tissue and causing an emergency hysterectomy after birth.  Because, the placenta would not be able to detach fully after birth.  But that again is dependent on where the placenta attaches, there could be no issues.  There is a tiny scar near my pubic area, it was all able to be done laparoscopically.

While I realize you don't need all the updates, I really want to make sure my story gets out there, because if someone else if going through this it might help them look in the right direction.  My husband was furiously googling things while I was in the hospital and he couldn't find anything with similar symptoms.

Thank you again for all the support.
