Parenting after 35

Fertility Meds

Hi everyone I am new to The Bump. I'm 36 and have been married one year. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant since our wedding a year ago this April. Today I went to my ob/gym and he ordered blood tests, put me on 50 mg of Clomid days 5-9 and the Minivelle patch (0.1mg per day) for days 9-16. My husband has a child from a previous marriage so the doctor wants to check me out first. I have regular cycles so does this mean my chances of a BFP are pretty good now with the meds? Thanks!

Re: Fertility Meds

  • There is a group on here called Trying to Conceive over 35. I haven't been over there but a lot of great ladies say they are a fabulous group. If you don't get any answers in this thread you might try them. Good luck!!

I was extremely lucky and did not need meds to get pregnant but I do have a good amount of friends that have been on Clomid and other fertility drugs.  Some were lucky in getting pregnant with just clomid, others had to move to injectibles and then other had to make the move to IVF.  It really depends on what is going on with you hormonally.  It may be a good idea to see an RE (reproductive endocronologist)  and have your husband's sperm analyzed.  Just because he has already had a child does not mean his swimmers may not be part of the problem.  Just like women lose egg quality as they get older, mens sperm also take a hit with motility issues and other possible options.

I truely hope the BFP comes quickly for you :)  If it doesn't I don't want you to get discouraged because clomid doesn't work for everyone.  Again, I would reccomend seeing an RE, especially since you have been trying for a year with no luck.  My own sister had fertility issues so I completey understand the roller coaster ride that you are on.

    Good Luck!!!

  • Please please please see an RE. You should be getting tested for issues before jumping to meds. If there is an issue the meds could help you get a bfp but it might not stick. I'd hate to see you go through that pain. Too many OB/GYNS are jumping to meds without first looking for the problem. An RE has one purpose- to help you reproduce. I think the ladies on TTC35 will give you the same advice. I'm very sorry you're having a hard time conceiving. Best of luck to you.

  • Thank you so much for your advice. I also posted the same thing over there:)
  • UPDATE: all my lab work came back normal but doc wants me to continue the next 4 days on Clomid followed by the Minivelle patch days 10-15. I have an u/s scheduled for day 15 to check my ovaries but that doesn't mean I won't be looking for a RE.
  • Good! Your dr should be able to refer you to someone. Some insurance won't cover it unless you got a referral so make sure you check!

  • Have you already been temping/charting? Used an ovulation predicting kit/system? If not you may want to consider starting. Knowing more about how your body is working can be helpful. Having regular cycles doesn't necessarily mean you ovulate on day 14. Also the are other things you can try - nutritional (ranging from major diet things to something simpler like taking the methylated form of fokic acid and maybe have dh take coQ10), using preseed, etc. Spend some time reading back through ttc boards - there is a lot of helpful info out there. You may want to look at (but not post on)ttc-al as well as >35. Though I'm not sure how many people are still here rather than having switched to the new forum site.

I don't mean to suggest you do any of that in contradiction to Dr 's guidace. But maybe in addition. Or if you can't get in with an RE for a while.

I was fortunate to get DD without fertility meds but it did take a year and a half. But nearest RE is like 4 hours away.and my insurance specifically excludes infertility treatment. Plus I am somewhat skeptical of mainstream / big-pharma medical practice . For example it seems pretty sketchy that your doc gave you meds without even waiting for blood test results.

Anyway - best of luck. TTC is such an emotional roller coaster. I hope you get that BFP soon!
