Almost 41 and 6 weeks pregnant - nervous

Hi everyone,

I am 6 weeks 1 day pregnant. I am about 1 months away from turning 41. I have had 3 children including one 4 years ago. I had 1 miscarriage about 7 years ago. I am in good health. I have had morning sickness and will have an u/s next week.

I know plenty of women at my age go on to have healthy babies, but I also know plenty have miscarriages as well. Does anyone have the latest information about miscarriage statistics in my age group/situation? I am still trying to make sense of all this!! I guess I am not looking for anything to be sugar-coated...

    I'm 37. I've had several early losses around 5-6 weeks and one late loss at 20 weeks. I was concerned this time as well because of my age. I was treating with the high risk clinic at my hospital and my doc told me that age actually has less to do with it than your actual history.  Age obviously increases risks a bit but I've been told that it was more dependent on my history of loss. That said.. this will be my 2nd successful pregnancy after my 20 week loss. It's hard to really know what causes miscarriages for the most part and a lot of the time we never know. I still don't know why we lost at 20 weeks. Everything was checking out fine and suddenly I was at work and my water trickled. and then eventually broke. I've been through a multitude of testing and genetic testing and everything came back totally normal.

    I don't have any statistics for you, but my mother had me at almost 43. She had no problems. So I don't always think that age means that much for everyone, but for some it does big time. I also had a grandmother that had a baby in her mid forties. Congrats and welcome!

    I am sorry to ask such a forward question - but did you ever feel like your mom was "old"? I hate that this is a concern in light of everything else, but I can't help but feeling like the old parent already. Not so much now, I guess, but being close to 60 when my child graduates HS. I worry that I won't have the necessary energy to give this baby everything it needs at each point of it's life.

    I know I can do the baby thing at this age, but will I be able to do the teenage thing in my mid-fifties???

    Well, I think we do what we have to do. :)  My fiance and I are both 43 and this is our first and likely only little one.  We were a little freaked out about being AARP parents, lol, but age is only a number.  Plus, since we are older, we feel we are more established, stable and financially secure.  I think there are pros and cons for being a younger mom and for being an older mom.

    My grandmother had my aunt, her last child, at 43.  (I just found this out recently.)  G'mom is 97 now and, while her health is declining, we are blessed that she's been with us for so long.

    Congratulations, and good luck!  Try not to worry (easier said than done, I know) and take it one day at a time. :)  We're here to support you!

    congratulations.  Don't worry about the numbers and statistics.  THey are just that, numbers.  It has no bearing on your particular pregnancy.  If you are going to miscarry you would whether 80% of people your age miscarry or 2% do.  Try to instead concentrate on things you can control to make your pregnancy as healthy as possible...good nutrition, exercise etc. 

    I am 42 and pregnant with my 8th child.  I have had a couple babies when I was over 40 and quite a few when I was over 35. 

    ALso, don't worry about your child thinking you are old...they will do that no matter what age you had them!  If you had your baby at 20, once they hit like 15 you would be so ancient to them at 35!!

    Congrats & welcome! I'll be 43 when this baby is born. My great grandma had my grandma at 45. I was also raised by my grandparents. Age is just a number. Kids get to an age and anyone over the age of 25 is old. They out grow it. Eventually. I had my first at 27. Sometimes I feel like I could have been much older and been a better ftm. I had my 5 yo at 37.

    Congrats! I'll be 40 soon, I have three boys; 11, 10 & 10 and now expecting yet another boy. It's definitely different being AMA. So much more stressful with all the tests, but the closer monitoring is nice!
