FTM Airline Travel

My husband and I may travel to see family in Washington in early August. Baby's due date is June 26th so we expect baby to be around 5 or 6 weeks old. Anyone travel via plane with a baby that young? If so, any advice?

Re: FTM Airline Travel

  • This is a good question! I'm wondering about measles since I thought I read it's airborne. Is that correct or did I misread?

  • It is airborne for I think up to 2 hours.
Children under the age of 1 can't be immunized with the MMR.

Your baby will have a lot of immunity from you but I usually wait to travel until the first set of shots.

You can travel and not have to pay for an extra ticket.

  • I flew with my first when he was five weeks. I figured breast milk gave him enough immunity. He did just fine, slept through all flights.
  • I thought about the fact of no immunizations but didn't think about the recent measles outbreak : /

Did anyone have problems with strangers touching their baby on the plane or at the airport?
  • I have to fly transatlantic when the baby is about that age, to bring us back to the US after a fellowship abroad. Am a FTM but my Dr said that babies can fly as early as 2 weeks, and the issue is more with the mom's recovery than the baby. Mom should try to wait 6 weeks before flying. Dr said to nurse the baby or use a pacifier during take off and landing, but otherwise there shouldn't be an issue.

Measles... I am going to plan to wear the baby in a carrier and just not make eye contact with people, to avoid interactions (and DH can run interference if really needed). Will carry antibacterial and wipes, and use them frequently.

But it is what it is, so am not going to stress too much. Dr said it's ok to travel, so I am trusting the trained professional.

Yikes @Kresla ! Thanks for bringing this up. As a FTM, I can't even imagine a stranger trying to touch my baby! (But I'm sure I will encounter this.) My momma bear instincts will come out and im sure I'll get very protective and may rip someone's face off! Good topic for me to think about and prepare for. :)
  • With the outbreak I personally wouldn't go. But if you go.. Bring germ wipes for around the seats.. And a cover to keep ppl away from the baby. Be very vocal if someone tries to touch.
  • I have had people wanting to take pictures of my twins...people are crazy!
  • @laurendutch that's creepy! What is wrong with people?!?
  • There've been 7 cases of the measles in WA. If you are worried about that, you won't ever be able to do anything or go anywhere! There were 644 cases of the measles in the US last year. I don't remember everyone freaking out about it so much. I hate that this might sound tin-foil-hat-ish, but don't let the media work you up and get into your head! If it was an epidemic, fine, but 7 cases out of millions of people is not even worth worrying about to me.
  • Buy a carrier for you baby (like an Ergo or even an Infantini Mei tei) and wear your baby all the time. You don't have to take your baby out for security, you'll have both hands free for all the stuff, and it will keep baby close and strangers away. You'll probably have to take baby out of the carrier for the actual flight, but that's no biggie. Traveling with a baby really is not that big of a deal, especially when they're so young and sleep so much. Good luck!
