Accidentally ate Tofu!

Has anyone else consumed tofu during pregnancy. I was just eating an organic enchilada which I thought was vegetarian only, half way through I noticed stuff that looked like chicken...ingredients said organic tofu! Then I'm reading all of these bad things! This is the only time I've had it and I'm in my second trimester....should I worry?

Re: Accidentally ate Tofu!

  • I've been told you just need to watch your intake of soy (which tofu is made of). Eating it occasionally is ok just don't eat it 3x a day every day. :) I've eaten it a couple times myself and my sister ate it while she was pregnant with boy of her boys. When we were talking about it one night she said she had never even heard of limiting tofu with either pregnancy.

  • I have never heard of limiting either, but what the PP said about soy makes sense.  I had some for lunch today...don't fret :)

  • Thanks ladies! I heard about limiting soy as well. I was just a little worried because it was a mistake...it was hidden by all the other flavors :) I'll have to be extra careful with ingredient lists from now on :) thanks again!
  • I'm vegan and I don't eat a ton of soy products, but I do eat them - maybe one serving per week. You'll be fine! Like PP mentioned, it would be different if you were eating it three times a day (nothing is a good idea in that quality). I would be more concerned about the GMO aspect of eating soy, but since it was organic, you're good to go with that too :)
  • Don't beat yourself up over it! Almost everything is okay in moderation and this is one of them!
  • Thank you both!
  • I don't understand what the issue is? I am vegetarian and have been for 15 years. I told my doctor my diet which includes many things made of soy and its absolutely okay. You didn't eat poison or anything. lol, your fine.
Always hold on to hope ❤
  • Yeah you are fine. Lots of vegetarians eat tofu while pregnant
  • I've never heard or been told tofu is an issue, I would not worry about that in the least bit

  • I believe the issue is more to do with what's in not-organic soy.
  • I've been having a lot of trouble getting enough protein (I'm normally a meat eater but haven't been able to stomach much of it while preggo). I asked my MD about adding protein powder to my smoothies and she oked both whey and soy based powders.
  • You'll be fine. I'd be more worried about eating meat. ;)
As a vegetarian of 19 years, I eat tofu on a somewhat regular basis and I'm super healthy. Just like anything else, don't eat it 5 times a day, every day. If you didn't mind it, consider incorporating it into your diet occasionally! Plant based protein is not only healthy, but harmless to everyone involved.
