I accidentally ate cold meat :(

Having gone through ivf and all we have to conceive, I am so super cautious. I saw a prepackaged salad with grilled chicken and figured it wasn't deli meat so I chowed down, proud of myself for giving my baby protein and veggies. Come to find out it wasn't a good choice at all. The meat was cold and pre-packaged. Can't stop kicking myself for that! Anyone else had cold meats and deli meat during pregnancy? I'm only 8 weeks 6 days and very nervous still!

I've eaten a few deli sandwiches. Most likely you will be fine, just try not to stress!

  • I fry lunch meat (turkey) if I have a taste for a cold cut. I'm sure u will be fine just don't do it again...lol!!
  • Don't stress about it- you can't change it now and I bet it was fine! I went through the stupid scanner at the airport and was completely freaked but the LO was fine when I had my US.
  • I worked at Panera bread during my first pregnancy . I ate a sandwich every day , I have a very healthy four year old to show for it lol. I'm sure your fine !
  • I had subway today :) think we will be fine!
  • Thanks ladies....I denied myself an Aunt Anne's pretzel tonight as punishment!
  • I ate them all the time when I was oregnant with my second and working in a deli!
  • It's totally fine. Don't worry and don't beat yourself up. I eat deli meat every day and did with my son as well.

  • Sure u will be fine
  • yep - i've been eating it knowingly too - sometimes just because it's so hard to find something else that appeals when i'm out and about..  I really wouldn't panic.  I always think back to my mothers generation - she would have smoked, drank and eaten everything through her pregnancy with me and i turned out ok.  It's important to be cautious but you can't let it rule your life or allow it to stress you out.
  • This is my 1st pregnancy, went through ivf as well, and I had no idea I'm not supposed to eat cold meat so I ate sandwiches for a week since it's the only thing I can keep down. I couldn't eat anything else at all. I was super nervous when I found out I'm not supposed to eat cold meats. I even ate a caesar salad too. I had my sonogram today and baby is healthy! I'm so relieve. I'm 8w1d today...so I'm sure you'll be fine too. :)
  • My OB said it's very outdated to recommend against deli meat.  There has been 1 confirmed case of Listeria from deli meat in the last 30 years.  What you should be concerned with is thoroughly washing all produce because there are constantly listeria outbreaks in produce.

  • That's good to know. Im going to avoid it, but sure hope my little one is okay!
  • You're fine. Avoid it from now on if that makes you feel more comfortable, but the likelihood of you contracting listeria from one salad (unless there was a particular outbreak or recall on particularly that product) is incredibly low. The current outbreak is in ice cream, so it can happen just about anywhere. But, we're pregnant and we have to eat, so there's no point in stressing over every single thing you put in your mouth for nine months.
  • The chances of getting sick from cold meat is very low. Especially if your chicken was already grilled it would have killed the big problem causers. No need to stress!
  • Thanks! Just got a piece of grilled chicken at work (warmed) and heated it AGAIN in w the breakroom microwave. I think yesterday scared me way too much.
  • I had cold deli meat three days in a row. My first pregnancy I never did. But I live in Japan and literally starve and it's been my saving grace. I figure deli meat is better than not eating.
  • I eat deli meat all the time! My doctor said as long as it hasn't been sitting out somewhere, which we wouldn't eat anyway. I don't warm it up either!

  • There was a post similar to this a few days ago. One lady said that more listeria cases are from produce, not deli meat. Another said that it's about the establishment. If they've had problems before with foodbourne illnesses, it's probably not best, but if you've never had a problem, chances are you won't now. Obviously take everything with a grain of salt, and do what makes you most comfortable, but not all of us are doctors, but not all doctors are right either.
  • I'm from the UK and our medical advice is that cold meats are fine!! Seems to be American specific advice!

As long as the meat is in date (and I'm sure you wouldn't be eating out of date meat anyway..) I wouldn't worry :)
  • Thanks ladies I feel so much better! I thought I'd hurt my LO!
  • I'm also eating deli meat. My doctor said she ate it with both of her children. I think all the stuff they say we can't eat nowadays is getting a little ridiculous. I'm not eating raw fish and that's about it.
  • A girlfriend of mine, who is a nurse, said that she avoided deli meat for her first but with the second one ate it all the time. She said that as long as you are eating from a reputable food establishment you have nothing to worry about. If you are more comfortable warming it up, then go for it.
I had a subway sandwich yesterday. Just to make myself feel better I had them toast it... but really, no worries :-)
