Drop sided cribs

My husband, trying to be sweet, bought us a used, in perfect condition crib. Just the one I wanted. But when he got it home and showed it to me, I realized it was a drop side crib. It's from 2007. It's in absolutely excellent condition. They sell kits to make it a fixed sided crib. How would you feel about this? Keep and convert it or buy a different crib? We don't have tons of money and the lady he bought the crib from said she won't let him return it.

  • I really don't think it's a big deal.. So many rules, new "suggestions" and they change every year about what is safe.. Next thing you know babies shouldn't sleep in a crib at all :) I have crib bumpers and my kids all slept on their tummy, (the only way they were comfortable).. just do what you think is best for YOUR baby...a drop down side crib will be fine
  • I would buy the kit

My family had been passing down a drop side crib for about 25 years now (no kit to make it kosher). Everyone is still alive. I'm not taking it because I live too far. Use your gut. If you don't feel comfortable don't do it...or buy the kit. I don't know much about the kits but if they do what I think they do I'm sure it would be fine.

ETA: depending on how she sold it to you she may have to take it back. Consignment, Facebook, Craigslist won't allow you to post drop side cribs for sale. He can report it as a scam since it is a "dangerous". I don't know if that's worth a fight though.

  • We have two cribs - both have drop sides.  We have not bought any kits.  My husband has a plan to prevent the side from dropping for our toddler, if need be, but I have never worried about it.  9 kids have been throught these cribs without incident.

  • I say keep it. Just make sure you do buy new mattresses!!!
  • I know a few people that had drop side cribs & bought the kit, I also know some that rigged it themselves. Both of our parents will have our old cribs that are drop sided which we are fine with. But this is a personal decision.
