Let me start by saying that I'm an animal lover. We have a lot of them, but my husband's dog drives me nuts as it is. He's possessive of my husband, like he'll wiggle his way between us in bed, takes over my side of the bed if I get up for any reason and goes with him to the bathroom. He actually just a weird dog. He's super spoiled and if I put him outside with the other dogs he'll cry and bark at nothing until I let him in.
I'm worried how this dog will be when the baby comes. I can totally see him trying to take over the babies bed, plus he sheds and I don't want pet dander around my baby. I already told my husband that things are going to have to stay changing now with his dog. He needs to learn to stay outside, but we can't have him barking all day, or drives me nuts, plus poor my neighbors. Any suggestions besides getting rid of him?
Re: husband's dog...
Exercise makes such a difference in dogs, even a quick 15 min walk a day can do wonders. I would highly suggest training though. We actually just had a trainer come in and help us with our dog, who's a really great dog but he's 120 and loves to jump on people when they enter the house. He also had some miner listening issues we wanted to tackle before the baby got here. The trainer was amazing and showed us some really simple (non abusive) ways to teach Duke that we were the leaders of the house. In 3 hours it amazed me how much better he listened! Look up the Bark Busters for your area, it's worth every penny! Which isn't a lot for what you get to be honest.
I had a big hairy dog and brushing him was a really sweet bonding time. Only took a few minutes and it made him feel good. We'd do it outside and then play. Perhaps try bonding with the dog and setting yourself up as alpha. He's not going to respect you if he doesn't view you as "the boss". And get him a doggie bed and out of your bed (another way to show dominance is you having the higher, nicer spot to sleep).
I'm very aware it's not the dogs fault that he sheds. Lol
Thank you ladies for all the suggestions, I'll look into all of these and find the best options in out area.
