Seasonal Allergies

Good morning! I am currently 7w with baby number 2 and this time I'm pregnant during allergy season. Obviously med are off the table, but what is everyone doing to combat the itchy eyes, stuffy nose, and sinus pressure? Normally hot green tea helps me quite a bit but of course it's not now. I'd love to hear any and all suggestions!

Re: Seasonal Allergies

  • Claritin in the morning and benadryl at night is fine! Both my general practitioner and ob said no problems. Also, Neti pot 2-3 times a day!

  • My doctor said claritin, benadryl, and zyrtec are safe.
  • My OB said OTC allergy medicines are safe as long as they aren't a decongestant. Zyrtec was recommended to me.
  • Thanks, ladies! I appreciate all of the feedback and will double check with my nurse. You each just made my spring more enjoyable.
  • Me too, it's been worse than any preg symtoms I've been having.  I'm not taking anything either, although I've heard the same thing pp have said about safe meds.  I just usually don't do well on those, claritin upsets my stomach and benadryl makes me so groggy, even the next day after taking.  So I've been going the natural route...neti pots, saline spray and humidifier at night.  Also keeping windows and doors shut (pity cause it is gorgeous where I am) and doing a little extra vaccuming to keep pollen out of house.  It took a little longer to kick in, but I seem to be doing much better this week.  There were a few really rough days there!  Good luck!
  • Meds aren't off the table! I took Zyrtec every day with my last pregnancy.
And will do so again this time.
The majority of OTC meds are perfectly safe. No need to suffer.
  • This season will be particularly bad for me. I'm a year round sufferer, but worst in spring. I also found out this year that the otc allergy pills (Allegra, Zyrtec, etc) give me hives! After years of taking them, either the formulas have changed or I changed.
I found a list on Pinterest of different meds safe for preggers.
It gives different options in the allergy category, perfect for me. I'm going to give Flonase a go.
