Comfort Nursing

My little guy is 10 months and he wakes multiple times throughout the night to nurse. He basically sleeps latched onto my breast and if he unlatches he wakes up very upset until he re latches. I'm usually pro-attachment parenting but this just feels a little too attached. Ideas?

Re: Comfort Nursing

  • Maybe you could try letting him nurse for less and less time each night? So the first night, nurse him 10 minutes every time he wakes up. Then gradually wean down by a couple minutes each night, until you finally just check on him and leave without nursing.

  • maybe try a pacifier and other soothing techniques?

  • I slip a pacifier in so she can keep sucking but I also get a break.
  • Try sending Dad in when wakes. Tha worked on the nights she slept in her crib. My little one did this too. At 10 months I didn't mind, but by 12 it drove me crazy. We started trying to find other ways to get to sleep without nursing. Rocking, stories, dad putting her to bed after she nursed well with me. It took about a month, but finally kicked in.
  • Witt both of my kids, the only way we were able to get rid of the night nursing was to send in DH rather than me. They slept in their own rooms though so the situation was a little different.
