military moms out there

I know breast pumps has been a hot topic but the info I need has not been found and I'm getting frustrated. I called champus tricare (military medical insurance) and got a lot of differing information. One said to save the receipt for the breast pump and you may get reimbursed. Another said they were not covered at all. Any dependent or military moms out there have any information on what tricare will cover, if anything?

Re: military moms out there

  • I'm a military wife, currently pregnant planning on breast feeding, but I'm also a precertification specialist so i have might have an answer based on my job more than my insurance.

I think the OB has to submit an order/prescription so they know it's "medically necessary" and they send in the codes and info necessary for coverage.

I would definitely ask them :)

  • I'm active duty and this is my second. With my first I was told it wasn't covered.
  • They told me only if baby was premie.
  • My husband looked up all the benefits for pregnancies, I have prime and it didn't say anything about breast pumps. But don't take my word. I already have one so I haven't been too worried about it. If you ladies find out, I am interested to know!
  • I'm active duty at Fort Lewis, WA and I know the hospital here told me no I'd have to get my own
  • They are working on getting them covered but have not released what will be covered or where to get them or even When the new policy will go into effect. For all we know it could be a hand pump. Best thing to do is either hold out and wait for tricare to get their crap together which we all know could take forever or just buy and keep the receipt.

Here is the link about how breast pumps will be covered

If that doesn't work just google tricare breastpumps 2015 it will pull up multiple articles.

  • I was rejected in March 2014 when I attempted to get one. Husband was active duty at the time. Tricare is so behind in this area of coverage. :( Most posts have a Lactation Consultant and I received a free manual pump from them.

  • When I applied for a breastpump I called Aeroflow Healthcare and they told me that under Tricare a rental of a hospital grade pump is only covered if the baby is in the NICU but when I asked if they did military discounts, they gave me 10% off a pump out of pocket.  It made a big difference since those pumps are so expensive.  The # for their breastpump department is 844-867-9890..they were really empathetic about it.

  • Try the marine relief society mayb they can help you obtaining one. If anyone you know has had one i know i had the medela one and i let my friend borrow it she just bought her own accesories for it (tubing&pump etc) that's another way to get one without having to pay 250 for it up front.
  • I've only had one friend who was given a pump for free but her baby was preemie and in NICU for a week. Don't think it's covered other wise but that was pre Obamacare.
  • Thank you everyone for the feedback and for your and your families service. I will definitely look into at least getting a discount! Tricare is usually a nightmare to deal with as you all know. Although, being a dependent of a military father who passed 20 years ago, I am always grateful to the military for my benefits. So not too much complaints here, but it would be nice to get some coverage :) thanks again all!:)
  • If you are on WIC they will give you a beast pump as far as I know. My husband is active duty and I was told the same thing by tricare. The good news is that the beast pump can be tax deductible. Double check but it can be considered medical expenses. Hope that helps. And if you do buy a pump make sure you buy a new one. and one the is manual is always helpful if the power goes out.
  • If you don't want to buy one there are places that rent out the hospital grade pumps. All the parts that come in contact with you or the milk are new. But yeah tricare doesn't cover them :(
