Would taking a few days off from prenatal vitamins be bad?

Hey everyone, So I started taking prenatal vitamins at about 5 weeks. Then I noticed that I got soon bloated, I know that may just be pregnancy related but I was wondering if I could take a few days off from my vitamins to see if that was what was doing it? I never have taken vitamins prior to this as I like to get my nutrients from the foods I eat. Now that I am pregnant, I know that little babe is needing a lot more and I am afraid that if I stop for a few days it could hurt the baby? I just want to see if I should try another vitamin if this one is cause me to bloat or if this is just the inevitable beginning of weight gain.  Thank you for any input :)

  • I know folic acid is a must as it helps protect baby from spinal bifilar (I think that's how it's spelt). I personally don't see no harm in changing vitamins as long as it has folic. Maybe ask a health professional for advice?

Thank you Sophie, I do not want to stop taking them. I am just wondering if this specific brand is causing me to bloat. If its just pregnancy than I know the bloating will not go away if I take a 3 day break. But if the bloating goes away then I know I should try another brand of prenatal vitamins. I just wonder if a few day break would be ok?
  • The bloating is from early pregnancy not vitamins. Any side affects from vitamins tend to be more stomach related...
  • I'm terrible at remembering to take vitamins and my child was born happy and healthy. She is now 15 months old and still happy and healthy! I don't believe its a big deal for you to take a few days off to figure out what the problem is.

  • Yes that's the one, I was trying to remember how they first ever explained it lol! I've bloated like mad!
  • Thank you for all the input, its bloating and digestive stuff that has been happening so I maybe the extra iron that was doing it...?

I apologize if I came off "selfish". I by no means want to take anything from my baby, Im so bloated and uncomfortable that its hard to sleep or even eat. Its not like "oh no my pants are snug" ... its far far beyond that. Thank you for your concern though :)

I was maybe wondering if it was the specific vitamin I am taking (Kind Organics Garden of Life). Its an all natural raw pressed so I didn't know if the crazy amount of added new stuff was throwing me off. I just didn't think this kind of uncomfortably came so early. I don't have my first appointment till next week, this is my first baby and I don't know what to expect at this point. lol. Thank you so much for the input I will keep on with those vitamins and hope that my body will regulate itself some time soon :)
  • Try taking the gummies. My doctor said they are great for people who can't handle big pills.
They don't contain iron, so they won't cause constipation. Iron isn't needed as much during the first few months of pregnancy, but it is needed greatly later.
I used the Rainbow Light Minis during my last pregnancy, and took them with fruit juice to hide the smell and flavor.

  • I thought it was weird I went to my doctor as soon as I found out I was preg (about 5 weeks or so) and he told me to just take until this week and not to worry about the prenatal after today! I was like HUH? He said it's not necessary until later on to start up again (not sure exactly when I go back April 15th so I'm going to ask him then)

Has anyone heard of something like this?

  • I second gummy prenatals. I couldn't swollow the pills for a few months with my daughter and switched to gummies for a while.
I doubt that are making you bloat but they could upset your stomach. It's worth trying different brands.

How confusing for you, the first thing any medical profession has asked 'are you taking your folic acid'. I got it screwed into my head it's essential lol
  • If you're worried it is the brand of vitamins, then try a new brand. Don't stop completely. It's most likely pregnancy related. If you're really struggling you should ask your doctor what to do. None of us can or should be telling you it's ok to stop taking your vitamins unless we are your OB.
  • I am 4 w and look like 6 m. it hurts.I also have strechmarks from my first pregnancy. I can hardly sit or lay. Sleeping is just plain weird. I can only ware tights and dresses. Pants are out of the question. Had the same with my first. The swelling just dissapeared in my 3rd month. Until la 5ft m you couldn't see that I was pregnant. So...hang in there....it will get better. Read the side effects on the vitamins. See if they include what you are going trough.
