Nexplanon vs Mirena

I have my 6 week appointment in two weeks and am needing to make a decision on my new form of BC. I've never had an IUD, but my sister did and had a horrible experience with it. Not sure if it was put in incorrectly or what. Ive never known anyone with the Nexplanon. My only concern with the implant is that I've seen quite a few reviews from people that have gained significant amounts of weight while on it or had big mood swings. I've only ever been on the Yaz pill and the patch but I want something I don't have to worry about dealing with every day/week. I can barely remember to put on deodorant in the morning at this point lol and as much as we love DD, we don't want any more babies for a while.
I'd love to hear from anyone with experiences with Nexplanon and Mirena! Thanks!

Re: Nexplanon vs Mirena

  • I had a Mirena iud before and loved it. Only issue I had was that it came dislodged and had to be removed. I had it in before having kids and it is not recommended for those that haven't had children yet because the uterus is too small and tight and tends to basically spit out the iud. My doctor had warned me this could happen so I wasn't at all upset or surprised when it did. I gained tons of weight on the depo shot and because of the type of migraines I get, I can't use most other birth control options. I plan to go back to Mirena iud once I am able to do so. I'm only 3 weeks postpartum. Hope that helps some...

  • That helps! I also get migraines that seem to coincide with the 'off week' in a pill pack. I just learned to deal for the one-two days that they showed up, but if I could avoid them all together, that would be awesome! I know it sounds completely vain, but I'm worried about gaining weight and not being able to get rid of it. If I even look at a doughnut, it goes straight to my behind. I don't need any help in that department :)
  • I have had trouble with BC in the past as well. I suffer with chronic migraines to begin with, and BC pills only made them worse. I was on the Ortho Tricyclin Lo when I was younger, the lowest dose of BC on the market, and it still didn't help. I was on the pill for ovarian cysts, but having a migraine for three weeks out of every month was torture. I'd rather have them for 3-7 days per month that I normally deal with (though I haven't had a single migraine since getting pregnant, so hopefully it's not an issue anymore? ::knock on wood:: ). So I am not really keen on going back on the pill. I am also not a fan hypodermics, so the Depo shot is out, and all of the reviews and health risks I have read about the implant have made me cross that one off the list too. I haven't heard anything about the patch. I am, however, thinking about getting either Mirena, or the Nuva Ring. I kinda like the idea of Mirena though because once it's in, I don't have to worry about it anymore until he and I want to try for another. Whereas with the Nuva Ring, it has to be replaced every 1-3 months depending on which one you get.

  • Lurking over from A15 and just thought my 2 cents could be helpful. I had used the nexplanon (previously implanon) and had a wonderful experience! The only downside for me was a decreased sex drive but all my previous bc pills had the same side effect. I didn't gain any extra weight, granted I was already on the heavy side. In the 3 years I had it, I had 1 period the first month after it was placed. It was magical!! After it came out, we waited 4 months before ttc and got pregnant right away. I personally am going to get the nexplanon again after LO is born since I had such a great experience the first time around. Hope that was helpful.
  • Did you have any random/sporadic breakthrough bleeding with the implanon? Along with the weight gain and decreased sex drive, that seemed to be the chief complaint.
  • @kac52b I had no breakthrough bleeding until the end. I had a normal period the month it was due to come out. I didn't really have any weight gain though. I maybe gained 5-10 lbs but I wouldn't say it was from the implanon more probably from poor diet and exercise. No need to lie lol.
