Painting the nursery

over the weekend we started working on the nursery. My husband had to sand down some of the walls and we painted the ceiling and a small portion of one of the walls to see if we liked the color. I was in and out of the room helping him cause of coarse I couldn't just sit back and watch. I did wear a mask while I was in the room... Never for long periods of time. Now I got myself all worried about even being in the room while we were working on it. Has anyone else painted the nursery or painted at all? Is it safe? I just started my third trimester and I have read online that it is safe as well as the room is well ventilated its latex paint and you aren't exposed to it for hours on end plus wearing a mask is helpful.

Re: Painting the nursery

  • Yes, I've painted. Just took precautions.

  • What precautions did you take?
  • I painted the entire nursery. I kept the windows open, wore a mask, and stepped out between painting each wall.

As long as it was latex paint, and the room was well ventilated, you're fine. It's not like you were huffing spray paint. ;)
  • Relatedly I got over "not pumping my own gas" early on in this pregnancy. DH still wouldn't let me paint or even spend much time in the painted room for now, but there's a point where it becomes absurd. I'm just avoiding fumes and only checking things out when properly ventilated.
  • I am hiring someone to paint our nursery (currently DS's room) and his new room--- DH won't paint, and doesn't want me to. So. That's what will happen then! Someone else will do it and be done with 2 rooms in 1 day. Boom. Problem solved.

But yeah, don't stay in the room for long periods of time, wear a mask and have windows open. You'll be ok.

  • I helped a little bit with painting our baby's room. I wore a mask, left the window wide open and then took breaks every 10 mins. I dont think my "help" amounted to much but it made me feel better to contribute!
  • I bought valspar no VOC low odor paint from Lowe's, painted with the window open and a few fans. The DH took care of priming and the ceiling. Over the weekend I sat on the front porch and painted her dresser :) I love to paint and my doctor gave me the okay.
  • I'm going to be painting our master bedroom this weekend. My DH will do most of the work, I'll just do the cutting in. Thanks for the tips!
