Army hospitals?

Anyone have experience with going to army doctors through pregnancy? I know that it's different, and I would say less full coverage than your average civilian OB. Like, I know you get one ultrasound at 20 weeks unless there's reason for concern, but that's honestly about all I know. I have my first actual appointment on April 7th, and I'm wondering how the process goes, since obviously most of the experiences I hear about are people going to civilian OBs.

Re: Army hospitals?

  • I only have experience with Navy hospitals, they do go a route with less interventions. I believe some Drs will do a first u/s to make sure it's a viable pregnancy some will not.

I was referred out last pregnancy and switched to Standard this pregnancy because they were not friendly with understanding that I have a work schedule and can't just hop on in whenever.

  • I have been wondering the same thing. We are stationed at Ft Hood. What about you?

Oh really? That's cool, we are at schofield, in Hawaii.

And I wish at very least the would do an early ultrasound like you mentioned, just so I could have some peace of mind.
  • We are airforce and it's the same. Unless medically necessary the only ultrasound is the anatomy scan around 20 weeks. Personally I have always found military physicians severely lacking in quality so with every pregnancy I switch to standard and see a midwife. Maternity care is 100% covered with tricare you pay nothing out of pocket even on standard.

  • I delivered my last at an army hospital and this time I will be seeing someone off base. Two ultrasounds. A dating one around 10 weeks and an anatomy scan at 20. They're very hands off and they won't intervene unless absolutely necessary. If you're someone that likes to see the doctor frequently and know exactly what to expect and what's going on; I don't recommend it. It's all very by the book too, they're not exactly up to date on the latest and greatest so a lot of things I was told were exactly out of a textbook.
  • And heaven forbid if it's something that isn't standard either. They couldn't wrap their head around the concept of having a 24 day cycle instead of a 28 day cycle.

I've really just not been impressed with my personal care there. My mc was horribly handled. They refused to send me to the OB, so my PCM pretty much said "I'm not sure what your seeing me for?" Umm.. to check my hcg levels. Duh.

Now. Our pediatrician on base is fantastic. So it can go either way.

Maybe see if anyone on the military board has experience at your hospital?
  • I was at Schofield for the first seven months of my first pregnancy.

I liked it just fine. If you express concern, they'll do a fetal Doppler or ultrasound. For example, I went in to ask medicine advice about a migraine (I'm prone to them) around fifteen weeks and they did an US because I was concerned.

It's not so bad-- just be upfront about your expectations. It's refreshing for military doctors to have people kindly ask for help instead of making unfair demands because they think they're owed something. If you have the right attitude, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I am so glad to hear that. I've heard a few things from people about it, but I am not close with anyone who has first hand experience (aside from a friend who had a miscarriage at 8 weeks in January, so her experience is relatively limited). So thank you for making me feel better about the quality of care. Especially hearing that they did an ultrasound for you at 15 weeks when you were concerned
  • The person I saw most at the clinic at Schofield was Miss Fuqua, and she was wonderful. :)
  • I delivered 3 of mine at a navy hospital. With my 1st and 2nd I had 2 ultrasounds (10 and 20 weeks) but with my 3rd I had an ultrasound most of my appts. But I was higher risk. I loved both of the ob's I had and felt my voice was always heard and my wishes were followed within reason.
