Increasing milk supply

my baby girl is almost 3wks old. She is currently taking 4oz and I've had to add formula to her diet since I'm not producing enough milk. Have any ladies tried Fenugreek Pills. And if so, how often. I want to exclusively breast feed. Please help!

Re: Increasing milk supply

  • Kelly mom is a great website for advice. I don't know how many you take but my sil said it made her smell like maple syrup

  • I currently take 2 pills 3 times a day and my supply has increased greatly. They do make you smell like maple syrup but it's not too bad. Good luck!
  • Most women take fenugreek 2-3 capsules 3x a day. If your sweat and urine smell like maple syrup you're at a therapeutic dose :)

Interesting that your LC said that tdegarmo1 because mine specifically told me I had under supply issues and told me to try fenugreek or more milk special blend, Reglan, etc. I also went from producing 16 to 24 oz with the above so for me personally they did make a difference.

That's amazing! I'll have to ask again specifically about fenugreek the next time!
  • Thank you ladies !
  • Oatmeal helps me. Even granola or cookies with oatmeal in them makes difference to me.

Also, I need to really watch my water intake and drink more than I think I need.

  • Careful with Fenugreek I just started taking it this week & I noticed a decrease in my supply. I talked to a handful of friends about it & heard from four other people that it dried up their supply. I then googled more & found mixed results online too. Some having increases & some decrease. I didn't take it yesterday & today & am going to start again tomorrow to try it one more time. I just want to rule out if maybe something else cause the decrease and see if I find a decrease again. So if you use it just watch close.
  • I haven't had a problem with under supply, but my LC told me to drink lots of water and add pumping sessions if I feel like my supply isn't adequate. It's been working for me and I'm now able to start a freezer stock pile. Good luck!
  • I also want to have a back up supply in the fridge/freezer.. Has anyone tried oatmeal & have feedback?
  • Skin to skin time can also help build supply. It's also a great excuse to snuggle baby and take a nap! Don't doubt yourself. ;)

I was looking to boost my supply just so I could pump and store. I made enough for DD to eat, but not enough to store. I started eating oatmeal every day, made a smoothie with oats in it in the afternoon, and started pumping twice a day an hour after her first morning and last evening feedings (so around 7AM and 7PM) and saw a change in my supply in a matter of a couple days. I actually woke up the other night because my boobs were so full I had to immediately feed her and then I pumped 6 oz afterwards. I was going to try lactation cookies with Brewer's yeast, but I didn't even need to after the process above. Be careful, as my LC told me to watch for clogged ducts and engorgement when increasing supply. Good luck!

I had a problem producing started eating lots of oatmeal and protein... snacking on granola through the day and I drink 1-3 cups of earth mama's tea for milk production and now I'm so full it squirts out. Also I put the baby on my Boobs non stop the more he sucks the more milk will come... make sure to drink lots of water and dont diet... not eating enough calories will decrease milk production... my doc gave me formula at one point cuz I wasn't producing but I refused and jus did what I said here and I'm loaded... don't give up... oh and don't fallow the feed every 2 hour rule I did at first now I put him up there every time he wants

Here is a link to a recipe for the lactation cookies I've been eating. Brewers yeast is the magic ingredient. We did cut the sugar in half so they wouldn't be super sweet.

Thank you! I dealt with engorgement during the first week so I know that's no joke! Lol it's just that my supply tapered off when I was dealing with mastitis during the second week (breastfeeding gives me never ending problems, but I'm determined to give her the best) so I hope to get it up to a reasonable yet plentiful supply
  • Hummus also helps build supply
  • I went through the same thing. Oatmeal and 12-13 8oz cups of water a day. Make sure you're eating enough calories in your diet as well. Pump often, it doesn't have to be for a long length of time 15-30 mins usually is good for me. Good luck!
