Diaper sizing problems..

ok so as a FTM I feel really dumb asking this. But how do you know when to go up a size? The newborn size is getting too small even though LO is only 8.5 pounds. So I bought size one, and they go up past his belly button and are big around the legs. Ugh what would you do?!

Re: Diaper sizing problems..

  • My son was 8 lbs. 7 oz. when he was born and he was only in newborn diapers for a couple of days. The size 1s seemed huge at first, but very quickly they fit just right. It didn't matter that they came up high after his umbilical cord stump fell off. I still have to keep them fairly snug around the waist, but he around 10 pounds now and they are still a good fit.

  • My son is currently 8lbs 12oz, one month old. The NB diapers are leaving red marks on his legs. Maybe I will just use the size one then and soon they will fit just right

I stopped using NB size around 2 weeks old. I ran out, which is the reason I switched to 1s, but I was glad I did in the end. They fit so much better. The box says newborn size is only up to 8 lbs anyway.

ETA: I still fold down the top even though his cord fell off awhile ago. I don't know why. I guess I feel like it makes them fit better? Or I'm just weird.

  • @junebugjam it's just a habit for you know. I realized I started doing it with the NB size (that had the cutout for the umbilical cord already in it #-o ) about half way through the large box of 125 we got from our baby shower!

@usmcwife89 size 1s should be just fine for your little guy. They do seem large at first but they grow into them. If it helps, do what Junebug suggested and fold down the top to tighten it up a bit until he gets bigger. Or, you can try overlapping the straps to make it fit snugger.

I actually plan on cloth diapering when she's about a month old, she's 2 weeks old right now. We only are using disposables until she grows a little bit more. The cloth diapers are so wide in the crotch that I didn't want to make her all bandy legged at such a young age; worse than she already is for being a newborn anyway. Anywho, I hope my suggestion helps. Good luck!

  • @StephanieLBerg I hope you like cloth! We have been in our fluff since the thrush went away and love it!

@tropicbreeze I can't wait to use the cloth diapers! We got a 12 pack of Bumgenius from my hubbys aunt for our baby shower. The ones I can't wait to use though, are the ones MY aunt designed and sells. She calls them the pocket protector diaper (we are mega geeks, can you tell?) and she designs and embroiders them in geeky themes. For example, for our baby shower she designed us a special Assassin's Creed diaper, a Dalek from Dr. Who, Pac Man, Pinkie Pie from My Little Pony, and Firefly Blue Sun inspired to name a few. I can't wait to see my daughter's geeky tush running down our hallway! :-)

  • @StephanieLBerg That is both epic and awesome! Where does your aunt sell her wares and does she do requests? A geeky baby summer tush would be super amazing.
  • And in general, the sizing issue is pretty universal. Mine is already outgrowing size ones in height and she's only 6 weeks. Got a lap full of baby pee last night for it (and a right shirt soaked from a milk dam burst). Gotta love mommy badges, I guess.

Go to seams-geeky.com! She also sells on etsy, but for diapers and special requests you need to go through her website :-) I am not going to lie, there is a bit of a waitlist, but her work is so worth the wait!

  • My little guy is 8 lbs 10 oz and 2 weeks old. I used up the package if newborn diapers I had opened and moved him to 1s yesterday. They are big but a much better fit. DD was the same size as DS but she stayed in newborns for 4 weeks. DS just seems to have a lot more in his diaper than she did. Or it's the difference between boys and girls because his diapers are more full in the front than hers are. My pediatrician told me to move him up to size 1 once his cord fell off. She said for boys a good fitting diaper will come past the belly button.

    Thanks. I'll check it out!

My little girl was a premie so she has been in newborn diapers for over 3 weeks now. I have used 4 different brands in this time and found they all fit different.
We used pampers in the hospital and they fit perfect. When we ran out I had huggies newborn and they were huge on her. The store was out of pampers when I went so I got parents choice (walmart brand; heard they were great) and they were big as well. I later went and got luvs and they fit great .
Pampers and luvs fit her great from 5lb to her current 6 lb 8 oz.
I will use what is left from the other packs when she is big for these brands but small for size 1.
  • I think it depends on the brand and style of diaper too. My LO dots perfectly in size 1 Pampers Swaddlers right now, but size 1 Huggies are still a bit loose around his legs. We go with what fits, not the weight rec on the box.
