Controlling the shopping urge... Buy ALL the things!!

I am trying really hard not to buy every baby thing I see, especially not before the baby shower, but it is SO difficult. I went to Old Navy's website to buy some maternity tees and checked out the baby section. Big mistake! lol
I find myself buying things I probably don't need since my SIL is giving us basically an entire baby wardrobe from my niece that was born just last summer.

Anyone else doing this? And how are you stopping yourself (if you are, haha!)?
And if you aren't stopping yourself, what is your favorite baby thing you have purchased so far?

Re: Controlling the shopping urge... Buy ALL the things!!

  • It's so bad! I'm just trying to avoid online/stores.

I was looking at bathing suits. She will be way too young to even go in the water but in my head "it'll be so cute"...so far, I've been able to put off buying it.

I've gotten some cute things but I haven't seen anything really to catch my eye...except at Carters. I have a list for there :)

  • I did that with my first child and ended up not using or liking so much. Now with my second I feel more practical. I am however splurging on a few big items and spend less here and there on non-essentials. That way I at least feel like I'm buying something fun. ;-)
  • I just spent $100 on Vera Bradley baby clothes and matching flip flops for me so that I can plan a cute photo shoot.... I don't even usually buy Vera Bradley... But holy cute baby clothes! If only they made matching bow ties for DH and DS....
  • Summerinfant.com is havina a 50% off sale on the entire site!!!!!!

Definitely hard not to give in to temptation! One thing that's helping is that my baby showers are all in April so I'm making myself resist the urge to get anything that could potentially go on my registry at least till they're all done so I won't buy any duplicates. As far as clothes go, I downloaded the Totspot app (basically an consignment app for babies/kids - highly recommend!) and everything is SO cheap on there that it's made me not want to spend the money in actual stores, because I know I can get stuff that's just as good on this app for wayyy less. I'm also trying not to buy too many clothes even on that because who knows how fast LO is going to grow - I don't want to guess wrong and buy too much of something for the wrong season.  So basically I'm resisting the urge just by repeating all the reasons why I should wait to myself, haha.

One thing that I have been spending a bit more than I probably should is knitting stuff. I knit and so obviously with baby coming I'm going crazy making stuff for her. I feel okay about this though because the yarn goes a long way and it takes me so long to make stuff that I'm not actually making THAT much. I made her this bunny that will last her for a while, since it's not clothes and she won't physically grow out of it:

  • It's SO hard!! My shower is in two months but I keep getting little things here and there that I assume people won't want to do... Like my friend bought me a BOB (I about died when she did!) and so I got the carseat adapter bar- cause who else would want to get a boring bard for $30? I got an extra carseat base when diapers.com was having a sale for half off... and then theres the HUGE sales I cant resist! (I'm the worst)... The main thing was like a pair of overalls that look just like mine from being a baby that for $10 I couldnt say no! DH says I'm okay so long as I dont go over $30 on a single trip which has been a pretty good cap cause if you think about it $30 here and there adds up. But the overalls and stuffed elephants have been my biggest downfall

  • Diapers.com is downright dangerous for me! In the beginning I had a few 50-100 dollar orders but I "justified" it in my head by buying 9 mo to 1 yr clothes for baby lol......... Sooo I'm no help. I'm better about buying but I did buy everything to decorate the nursery and my friend got mad and said..." Just wait for your shower people might give u good things as far as decor" I didn't know any better!!!!
  • I've not even bought a pair of socks TBH. I bought so much for DD and ended up having way more than I needed. I'm not stressing it this time. I'm not stocking up on clothes months in advance and I'm not buying creams, lotions, shampoos, or meds until I know what this LO can tolerate. DD was allergic to the world and I wasted so much money buying Johnson's and Desetin and gas drops. I can't bring myself to buy things in afraid I won't need or that I may get at my shower (only having one because I'm having a boy, my family does one girl one boy shower). MH has older girls that are buying clothes and my granny is baby crazy so I might as well save money while I can. There's not much that can't be bought right around the corner if needed. Also my house isn't even completely built so I've not started on a nursery.
  • You guys are such enablers...went shopping and bought 4 rompers! They are so dang cute!

Plus, my sons got some "Ray ban like" sunglasses. I tried to say no but they told me they wanted them to look like mine...how can I say no to that???
  • I haven't bought anything except a crib and dresser / changing table. I'm hoping to be gifted a bunch of gently used clothes like some people promised so I'm not buying any clothes until much much later in spring (like mid May). I will probably start slowly buying things off my registry (I don't get a shower and know that we will probably be on our own for most things) every couple weeks or so, like $100 here and there when I get paid. So when I do spend, its not going of be on cute things, it'll have to be on actual stuff I'll use like bottles and diapers and steam sanitizers, etc.

  • Haven't bought much just a crib and travel system :) but am going nuts trying to find a dresser that I don't hate. Also decided I really want to buy curtains this week super silly but it'll probably happen tomorrow.

I have found the websites smallable, milk bots nd blahbla. I've spent wayyyy too much money, I won't even tell you because I'm embarrassed. I've been having stuff delivered to my parents house so my husband won't flip out LOL
  • They have had some consignment sales in my area so I have stocked up on some play mats and clothes of various sizes. I've decided that I will not buy any new clothes for minion because he will just get them dirty and grow out of them so fast.

I also got the crib and dresser and started working on the nursery.

Finally, any time DH and I make a Target run we get a thing of wipes and a pack of diapers so we can stock up now and it's so Bly a little bit added to our total bill. A friend suggested that to DH and I thought that was brilliant!
  • Struggling with this today!!!! It's rainy here in CT and I just wanna hit the outlets!!!!! My mom keeps telling me... No more baby clothes! But they're just so cute!
  • I haven't been controlling the urge very well! I justify by saying I got it all on a really really good sale and its 0-12 months. So I won't feel too bad if he doesn't wear half! Lol!!
  • Why did you tell me about Vera Bradley baby clothes...not a good thing, I already have an addiction buying her bags!
  • So fat i've limited myself to consignment sales/stores - that's where I let myself go crazy. But I do have a couple gift cards that I can't wait to spend on fun stuff!

  • Damn this thread. Now guilty of spending $75 on zulily for an awesome nightlight thing for baby and some yoga pants and a dress for me. I've officially turned the corner into buying things mode. :-<

  • I just sent my husband out to go pick up a really heavy dresser/changing table combo. I feel horribly guilty but it was free and in good shape! I like it because it can just be a regular old dresser if you take off the pad on top!
