Pregnant after 35

Not reflux!!!

During my 5th pregnancy I developed the most horrific pain in the center of my abdomen right underneath my breastbone area.  Along with it would  sometimes come nonstop vomitting.  The first time I got it I thought my gall bladder was having an attack or something.  My husband made me wait overnight before going to the ER and I was in so much pain overnight.  I couldn't even lie down because the pain was so bad I couldn't be still.  ER sent me right to L&D and they monitored me, did some bloodwork, urine tests and ultrasounds.  They said it "must" be reflux because they could not find anything else.  Over the next weeks my Dr. prescribed me many things and none were able to help.  I did some research on my own and found people got good results with apple cider vinegar.  It worked for me.  I would drink a Tablespoon mixed in a cup of water and ice before everything I ate.  I also ate every couple hours rather than eating a meal.  I would just eat the components of a meal one thing at a time spaced a couple hours apart.  I only had 2 months left of that pregnancy and after about a month it was much better and I could eat normally.

Well today it started again!  Horrific pain.  I could not even stand the kids talking to me.  After a while I decided to try the apple cider vinegar again and about 10 minutes later the pain was nearly gone!  It really is awful to take but it works so well and I would rather do that than meds that could possibly be harmful.

The bad news is this time I have much longer to go.  3 1/2 months.

The interesting thing was that child was born with an absolutely incredible amount of hair.  It was darker than any of my other blond childrens' and it was so long and there was tons of it.  She never lost it and by the time she was 2 she had so much very very long wavy curls.  When she was born everyone said it was like the wife's tale that indigestion and heartburn mean a baby with hair.  Anxious to see if this one will have the hair too then!

Re: Not reflux!!!

  • Wow! That's really interesting. I wonder if I should try it.  I get the same pain under my breastbone. I wouldn't call my pain horrific but it's like a burning pain and it definitely bothers me.  My OB thought reflux and so did I because I literally can't lay down without feeling like I'm going to barf.  I have to prop myself up on like three big pillows so that I can sleep. I talked to the OB.. they said try tums and if those don't work try zantac.  So right now I bet I pop 5 tums before bed and sometimes I drink a glass of milk (DH's suggestion which does seem to ease it a little bit).  But the tums just aren't getting rid of it.  I basically lay there until I finally fall asleep and then it eventually stops.  But it doesn't seem to matter what I eat either. I can't eat large meals either. Lately, my portions are cut in half. I actually lost a lb at the OB yesterday.  Trust me.. I have plenty of extra lbs.lol  But I wonder if I should try the apple cider vinegar!

  • when I describe my pain and location to people that know they have reflux they always say "oh that's nothing like my reflux" especially the throwing up part.  When the meds didn't work for me I was thinking it wasn't reflux.  Then I tried the vinegar and it worked so I figured it must be indeed reflux.  Maybe mine feels different than others because no one I have talked to has actually been pregnant with reflux?  Perhaps the fact that a pregnant woman's organs are all mushed and mashed and out of place make it a bit different.

I have no real burning in my throat and thats how most people say their's is.  Mine isn't even what I would consider a true burning.

Definately try it.  I find lots of ice helps it not taste so strong...the cold kind of numbs you up some.  Also drink it with a straw.  Less contact with your tongue...and the vinegar isn't real great for your teeth, the straw helps avoid those.  The first time you will probably be shocked that it tastes really nasty.  But I find once you know what to expect, its not so bad.  And to have the pain gone...so worth it.
  • I lived on tums and zantac my first pregnancy and my son had a quite a bit hair when he was born, we could always tell in our ultrasounds he had a full head of hair too. I had always heard about the vinegar trick but never tried it. Interestingly enough, cold drinks always make my reflux much much worse!!

  • sidey1, hmm cold drinks make your reflux worse.  I drink tons of water everyday...tons.  I always make it real cold too.  Maybe I will try to drink it without ice for a few days and see if it lessens the reflux.
  • I don't have reflux quite as bad, but I make myself a hot tea every night of a tsp of honey, 2 tsp of apple cider vinegar and the rest got water. I actually like the taste now and I am able to sleep so much better.

  • Sorry - Reflux is the worst! I've been having regular heartburn and praying the reflux leaves me alone. Vinegar didn't seem to do anything for me, but i always read that it has numerous benefits. I had an herbal mix that seemed to be helping but had to stop taking it when pg.

  • We have never had a "bald" baby born in our family.  Our babies are overwhelmingly born with massive amounts of hair, all of them.  We have all wondered who would be the first to have a baby with "little amounts" of hair, so far most of our families babies have actually been born needing haircuts!

It's a pretty much known "old school thought" that heartburn = hair.  I am only 13 weeks along and my heartburn with this one started before i knew I was even pregnant.  In all honesty, that's exactly how I knew I was pregnant, the heartburn.  An overwhelming sign in our family.

Nothing helps it, nothing at all.  If I take a sip of water, I get awful heartburn.  I have had my gallbladder taken out so I know the difference with that!  LOL.

I hope you feel better soon and I hope your baby is born with a ton of hair!
  • xuxachi...I will try it as a hot tea sometime and see how I like the taste.

  • Cneiding - it's an acquired taste. Give it a few tries before you give up. You might even like it! Good luck!
