We just started our LO on rice cereal this weekend. He just turned 16 weeks old today. He was starting to get really fussy between feedings and he hasn't gained as much weight as we were hoping in the last couple of weeks, so we decided it was time. The pediatrician recommended starting at 4 months so we are pretty much there. He has done REALLY well with it so far!
We started giving my 14 week old now who was 12 weeks when we started giving him rice cereal he loved it ive heard it helps them sleep longer since sometimes formula or breastmilk doesnt fill them up like it used to. Its fine though! As for solids im really tempted but im going to wait til his 4 month mark you never know lol.
My LO just turned 16 weeks today. We will start giving him solids when he turns 4 months. I tried to spoon feed him cereal last week and it didn't go to well. He sleeps through the night without it so we decided to wait. But we will be starting with fruits and veggies
Nothing but breastmik so far. A few doctors have told me starting them on food at 4 months increases risk for food allergies and he still just seems to young to me to be eating food. I plan on waiting until he is 5 or 6 months to start introducing oatmeal or fruits and veggies.
We are going to start with sweet potato. My lo is 15 weeks old and my hubby and I disagree on when to start him. He wants to now to see if it helps him sttn but I want to wait because of the allergy thing. We will prob end up trying after his 4 month shots.
My LO is only 13 weeks old, so we aren't ready for food quite yet. I'm hoping to get as close to 6 months as possible without adding food to her breastmilk only diet to avoid allergies. G has eczema and a dairy allergy so we will be doing whatever we can to minimize her risk for future allergies (and hopefully outgrow her current issues).
My LO is 16 weeks today and has been having thinned out oatmeal since 12 weeks due to reflux. I mixed it with half water half Apple juice and half a scoop of formula. I did one ounce fluid and a tablespoon of cereal so too thick for a bottle but a creamy soup like texture. I thickened it a bit more this week and he loves it! Also put more juice in it. He only gets it at bed time. Since doing that and 3 oz of milk at bedtime he sleeps 6 hours straight! It's glorious!
We started with oatmeal cereal at 14 weeks...oatmeal because of the studies on the arsenic in rice cereal & at 14 weeks because LO was very interested in food, sits up with assistance, and has more than doubled his birth weight so the pediatrician gave us the ok. Now at 16 weeks we've tried sweet potato purée & sweet pea purée. Still breastfeeding as the main food source...purées are given maybe once every two days as an extra.
Today is the second day our daycare provider has fed our son rice cereal in between his feedings which are primarily breast milk. In the evenings, 7pm I breastfed until he is full, roughly an hour and he doesn't wake until 3 or 4am. I breastfed for an hour and he sleeps until 6am, mainly to be changed and his daily abc song on YouTube for 20-30 minutes then another feeding then sleep. We've been told we are lucky and to just wait until he is teething and ready to potty train. I'm just so happy we decided to let our little one tell us when he is hungry. Well, thanks for reading, short version rice cereal.
I started my son on organic brown rice cereal when he was 13 weeks. He was interested in food and putting everything in his mouth. I started with a few bites mixed with breast milk then a tbsp at a time. We did that for 2 weeks and just stated avocado for 7 days then banana mixed with cereal. He is doing great! Do what you think is best for your LO!
It is generally recommended to not start solids until 6 months. Many people start introducing after 4 months, but do not start earlier without discussing with your pediatrician first.
Babies will show readiness for solids. They should be able to sit in their high chair and have excellent head and neck control. Babies have a unique tongue thrust reflex that helps them feed from a bottle/breast. They will need to outgrow this to be able to properly eat solids.
As for what to feed, there are many different schools of thought. Traditionally people would start babies on cereal then move to fruits and vegetables. Now many people are skipping the cereal and feeding fruits and veggies earlier. I believe that meats should also be started early since they are a good source of protein.
Primary nutrition should still come from breastmilk and formula even after introducing solids.
My baby is 18 weeks and hubby wants to start her on rice cereal so she sleeps thru the night. She only gets up once so I think she is just perfect and am fighting to keep her away from solids til she's closer to 6 months. I'm in agreement with the mom above who says food too soon is a concern
I've been doing a lot of reading that giving baby rice cereal is an outdated concept, because know it's known that babies can't digest grains properly until after at least 1 year. It's also never been proven that cereal will make a baby sleep longer.
My doctor recommended we start with oatmeal rather than rice as it has been proven that rice contains arsenic. He also said that our 19 wk old should not start oatmeal until her tongue doesn't thrust forward (like she is nursing). She has great neck/head control but we are going to wait until she is 6mo.
I started my baby on thinned out rice cereal at the 4 months mark at the recommendation of my pediatrician. A couple days later he started vomiting and had diarrhea. We stopped the rice cereal immediately and went back to just formula and he has been fine ever since. I think in retrospect I made a mistake and my baby was not ready for solids yet. I decided not to try introducing anything new to him until 5 months and seeing how it goes then. I'm just letting you ladies know that even when the pediatrician says baby is ready that doesn't mean baby is ready. I feel really guilty that I put my baby through 2 days of misery because of solids before we figured out that it wasn't his time to have them yet.
We tried rice cereal at four months bc pediatrician recommend but at the first feeding I felt my lil one was not ready. She was crying and pretty much getting it all over herself not eating. I tried again today. She did great! She was eager and seemed to truly like eating it. This time she was swallowing! You'll know what's right. Give it a go!
