Trying to Get Pregnant

newbie TTC - stopped the pill

Hi everyone. I am new here. I have been married for 6 months. Me and my husband have decided we are ready to start trying to have a baby - or at least go off the pill to stop preventing it. I have just stopped taking the pill one week before my period was due, however got it during that week. Is this then a natural period or still a 'fake' one?

  • You stopped mid pack?

  • I stopped the pill one week before my period I came on 2 days earlier. This time a month later I'm now pregnant
  • I removed my NuvaRing 5 day early. Period started a day later and then my cycle evened out to how it had been pre-pill. If it were me, I would count it as a period.

When you stop a pack early and it can make it slightly more difficult for your body to adjust. If I were you id pick up a thermometer and the book Taking Charge of a Your Fertility. Starting to temp will help you understand your cycles faster.
  • Technically, any bleeding you have during the placebo week of taking the pill is not a period. It is withdrawal bleeding. A period is the shedding of your uterine lining 10-16 days after you ovulate. When you're on the pill you don't ovulate.

Regardless, you should count the first day of bleeding as cycle day one. You cycles might not be the same as you remember them pre pill. They might not be 28 days. That is normal.

If you want to save yourself the constant questioning yourself about what's going in with your body, I would very very highly recommend learning about your cycles -- the follicular phase, luteal phase, charting your temp. You can do the tutorials on fertility friend and read a great book called taking charge of your fertility.

And fyi, you shouldn't stop taking pills mid pack.

Does that matter for monophasic bcp or just bi- and triphasic bcp? With monophasic the cycle is just an artificial 28 day cycle and since the doses are the same throughout the month, I can't see why it would matter?

I think so, because your body was used to artificial hormones for 21 days, then one day you suddenly remove them earlier than 21 days. I'm not 100% sure, but I have always waited until the end of the pack, just to be more careful to start out on the right foot.

However, if you are taking the minipill (progesterone only for breastfeeding mothers) you could stop anytime, since that pill is taken continuously.

  • Personally when I was on the pill, my doctor told me to finish the pack I was on, then I could start trying. I waited one full month after finishing my pill pack just so that I would get my period on it's own. For me, when we tried for my first child, it took over 5 weeks before I got my period. Good luck TTC!

    Sounds like your period.
